Richard Rubin -- husband of former Broward County Commissioner Diana Wasserman-Rubin, who still faces seven felony charges of her own -- was sentenced this morning to ten months in federal prison. Rubin, 66, pleaded guilty in April to federal tax evasion after failing to report $100,000 in fees he received from the town of Davie for a land deal he brokered in 2004. With attorney David Bogenschutz at his side, Rubin managed to get only ten months up the river...much less than the maximum penalty of five years.
Rubin had said in court that he and the wife faced financial burdens from damage done to their home by Hurricane Wilma and also owed on a loan he could not repay -- which is why he attempted to cheat on his taxes a bit.
That also wasn't too long after Rubin took in $1.1 million for writing grants for the town of Southwest Ranches -- grants that were approved in part by the votes of his wife while she was a county commissioner. Then, the probable-cause affidavit released last year contended, the couple was living quite lavishly -- including spending money on artwork, cruises, vacations to Europe, and a $150,000 home repair project. Rubin wasn't charged with tax evasion until April of this year.
The State Attorney's Office, however, charged Wasserman-Rubin last year with seven counts of felony unlawful compensation related to her votes for her husband's grant-writing.
DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman-Shultz' parents. Thanks La Lydia.
“DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman-Shultz’ parents.”
I see that was conveniently left out of the article and will also be left out of the mainstream presshole’s news reports.
You may have the wrong Wasserman there. Wikipedia has her mother listed as Ann Wasserman.
Sorry, not her parents. Wasser-Putz has her ex-husband’s last name, not her parents’ name.
Maybe next time we can put Little Debbie’s psycho-ass in jail for something, like embarrassing our country for being a politician, if that is possible.
She’s a Democrat, you know. Nothing embarrasses them, from being caught with their pants down to stealing from their constituents. Just business as usual.
Broward congresswoman, ex-county commissioner not related, contrary to reports
January 18, 2012|By Brittany Wallman, Sun Sentinel
News flash: Wikipedia isn't always correct.
The online encyclopedia's penchant for posting inaccuracies isn't helping U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Weston, whose parents are listed on Wikipedia as being two fallen public figures in Broward.
"She is the daughter of former Broward Commissioner Diana Wasserman-Rubin, and her stepfather is Richard Rubin," the entry about the congresswoman reads.
Wasserman-Rubin resigned from the Broward County Commission in 2010 and is facing trial on public corruption related charges, and Rubin, a former grants writer for Southwest Ranches, is serving a 10- month federal prison sentence for tax evasion.
Wasserman Schultz has a national profile as head of the Democratic National Committee, so conservative bloggers took the faux familial tie and ran with it.
A caller to the Sun Sentinel on Tuesday asked why the relation between the two wasn't "a national story.'' He'd read about the mother-daughter kinship on the Internet.
Untruths can live on Wikipedia for a long time before they're corrected, according to the Wikipedia entry "reliability of Wikipedia.'' The entries are written and policed for mistakes by the public.
The Cuban-born Wasserman-Rubin said she carries the "Wasserman'' surname from her first husband, father of her two children (neither of which is in Congress).
"We are not related at all,'' she said. " Not related with any connection whatsoever.''
Wasserman Schultz, meanwhile, is a non-Hispanic Jewish woman whose parents are alive, well and not facing any public corruption charges. She said her father is a CPA, her mom works at Macy's, and the two have never been involved in politics, ever.
She said she's seen an occasional Tweet making the erroneous tie, but the misinformed are a small minority.
The congresswoman is 45. The ex-commissioner is soon turning 65. So by that measure, at least, it's plausible. But that's where it ends, she said.
"She could technically be my mother,'' Wasserman Schultz said, "but I would have to be Cuban-American. And Catholic.''
