Thanks NEWwoman. It's my third favorite military quip, my second favorite is, "They've got us surrounded again, the poor bastards." (Creighton Abrams). My fourth favorite (no, you didn't ask) is from World War One -- "Lafayette, we are here!" (Charles Stanton, July 4, 1917). My favorite? Patton's speech to the Third Army in entire, not the sanitized version from the movie. This topic appears to be pimpin' a 'blog, but I don't care. It's also a modern history topic, but I don't care. It was a cold winter 67 years ago. Relief was promised by Christmas Day, but it didn't make it -- 4th Armored Division broke through on the 26th. My mother-in-law remembers this very well. She was a school girl at the time and tells me that holiday season the whole country was transfixed over Bastogne and whether those boys would be rescued in time. (I know, the 101st has always maintained they didn’t need any rescuing. :-)))
