GOP record on illegals: 25 years of broken promises

History is apparently not Newt Gingrich's strong suit, despite the fact that he has a Ph.D. in history and taught it in college before entering politics. Probably he knows a lot about Greek or Roman history – but things that happened only 25 years ago? Don't ask.

Gingrich suggests it would be "humane" to allow illegal aliens "who have been here 25 years, go to church and raise children in our communities" to have legal status. Of course, he then backtracked and said, let's not do this until after we have border security.

That's basically what we did in 1986 with the amnesty legislation that gave legal status to 3 million illegal aliens. Gingrich wasn't in Congress yet, but surely he has heard of the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act. It was signed into law by President Ronald Reagan.

That amnesty was sold to Reagan and passed as part of a "bipartisan deal," the terms of which were never honored. We were promised three things. First, this was to be a one-time amnesty, never to be repeated. Second, new laws were enacted to punish employers who hired illegal workers. Third, the border was to be secured.

All three promises have been broken. There have been numerous small amnesties enacted since 1986, and enforcement of the employer sanctions was never undertaken in a serious way. But by far the most egregious and hypocritical broken promise was that of border security.

This is true way of looking at it, as there is and this be the best assessment of what must be done, that I have seen.

The GOP are bought and paid for, they are accomplices with the Dems/Marxists/Leftists in the destruction of America.

The GOP has been that way since the beggining of the Bush Clan, one of Reagan’s only big mistakes.

Not the GOP broken promises, the entire Congress broke the promise to uphold the Constitution as well as the SCOTUS. We need to impeach SC Justices and get rid of a significant number of the current Congressmen and Senators that cannot support the Constitution or defend the Country. We don’t start the turnaround soon we are going to end up like Great Britain.

Do you think they should start setting term limits on Congress ? Reid has been there forever and he should be away from there, he has done enough damage.

Impeach a congressman: the large majority of the American people are pre-committed to their own “lawmaker” and shall remain so.

Immigration is foremost a political question in this country.

Both parties act based upon how it will affect their election chances.

Some Republicans want a cheap labor force...others want them all out because they vote democrat.

Most democrats want an ever swelling minority of new immigrants dependent on them for freebies.

Dems are the masters of vote buying, a carton of smokes for your vote, amnesty and welfare for your vote.

There is a limited amount of stolen taxpayer money the dems can use to buy votes. If the hispanic turnout for the dems ever reaches the break even point (probably about 60% dem to 40% repub) they will calculate that their stolen funds can be better spent on another group and the border will be sealed tight.

If hispanics voted overwhelmingly republican would your view of amnesty change? Be honest now.

The only policy position that I have ever seen the democrats take when it was clear that it would cost them an enormous number of votes was abortion. If not for abortion there would be many millions more black voters in this nation today. This proves they can’t help themselves when it comes to butchery, even if it costs them a lock on elections.
