Rick Perry’s Second Time At Bat
Red State ^ | December 4, 2011 | Erick Erickson

Posted on 12/04/2011 7:10:13 AM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

Last night on Fox News’ candidate forum, Governor MItt Romney defaulted to quoting David Brooks from the New York Times. There’s why Herman Cain’s supporters will be looking at Gingrich and Perry.

In fact, last night a number of Cain’s Iowa staff moved to Rick Perry.

Rick Perry will get another look. He will get another look because while the grassroots and Republican voters in general are moving to Gingrich, conservative leaders around the country are rapidly running up their watch towers to light fires against Gingrich. They remember him from the 90′s and they don’t trust him.

Rick Perry is going to get a second look. Jon Huntsman made the fatal mistake of branding himself too moderate. He’ll get a look if people don’t like what they see in Rick Perry.

This now raises a huge red flag: is Rick Perry ready for his second chance?

I’m not sure Perry is ready. His debate performances have steadily improved. But there is a real problem for Perry. He needs to run a really flawless race and his campaign needs to send out some strong signals that they get it and will perform.

Rightly or, I hope, wrongly, I get the impression they still think it is their race. I think they still think they are biding their time. I think they still think they are fighting Kay Bailey Hutchison. I think if they don’t wake up soon and shake up, they are toast.

Rick Perry is going to get a second look. He is the most consistent conservative in the race. In fact, this should be his race to lose given his positioning.

“Your defeatist postings on this thread will not keep Perry from fighting on as he already has. He has weathered the non-stop attacks and stayed out there meeting the people — who like him and his proposals.”
_________________________________________________

I never said my postings would keep any candidate from fighting. What I've been saying is, when we as conservatives (or Republicans) decided to cast our lots with the Left-Wing hit pieces against our candidates, the die was cast. You may not like hearing that, but it's true.

When fellow conservatives (even if they didn't support Cain) decided to go along with the premise set by the Left, they ensured that the same would happen to other conservatives. Trust me, Perry (and Newt) have no idea what they're about to face.

Sadly, Perry will receive the same criticism at how he's handling the allegations as Cain did. Cain had some great positions on issues, but they became irrelevant once the Left’s attacks began. I thought it shameful that fellow conservatives (FReepers) would side with a left-wing slime on one of our own. Sadly, the same thing will happen to Perry. Your criticism would be more accurately directed at those “conservatives” who decided to join with Politico in their attacks on a fellow conservative.

Sorry, but the template has been set, and we've allowed this to happen!

You apparently lack reading comprehension skills, and you’re lazy. Please provide us a post of me pimping Romney?

I’ll bet you can find a whole slew of me pimping Palin and Cain though. ;-)

Yeah, “really”. And my father was born there. Every time I’ve seen Perry speak since he’s been running for the nomination, I hold my breath wondering if he’s going to be able to complete a sentence. How he spoke prior to getting in the race means zip compared to how he’s spoken since then, which has been embarrassingly inept. I don’t think he’d be a bad president and he might be a very good one, but if his performances so far are any indication, I think he’d sound like a buffoon in debates with Zero and would turn off potential voters who aren’t already committed to him. If he can’t squeeze out more than 3 words without stumbling over them he’ll never convince people of his positions, no matter how valid they might be.

Hogwash.

If there were no basis for the Cain allegations, Cain would still be in the race. There is absolutely no reason to drop out IF you are clean.

IF Perry has dirt, we will find out soon enough. If he is stupid enough to run, as Cain was, with those skeletons in his closet then they deserve to come out. I personally think Perry is pretty clean on the Bimbo front.

Oh it may not be Bimbos, but the media will find something...trust me.

We’ve basically handed this nomination to Mittens, and thus to Obama. We took the Left’s bait without even a fight.

We’re are own worst enemy. I guess this is why they call us the “Stupid Party.”

The only buffoon on a stage that held Rick Perry and Barack Obama would be:

You can post all the pictures of numbnuts you want, but you’re sadly mistaken when it comes to how they’ll be perceived unless Perry improves his ability to articulate his positions by at least 100%.

Perry opposition posters, like you, can talk down Perry all you want but when voters assess Perry’s performances vs the few sound bites blown way out of proportion, that make headlines for days and weeks, they will see he is a solid conservative who will work for the people to shrink government and give power back to the states.

He is an honest man.

A Perry/West ticket would be fantastic.

I am not a “Perry opposition poster”, whatever the hell that means...in fact, I don’t think I’ve ever posted a comment in opposition to Perry, Mrs. Kneejerk Response. However, I’m definitely not a fanatic for any candidate...and certainly not to the point where I can delude myself about their obvious deficiencies. “A few sound bites blown way out of proportion”? LOL

I apologize if you’re not posting anti-Perry comments like others, however when you say he must improve 100% you lose credibility. All the other candidates are excused for anything but Perry is held to the highest standard.

No problem, but I don’t understand your objection to the statement that he needs to drastically improve his presentation skills. I would like for him to come off well (I agree with quite a few of his positions and in my Dad’s younger days he and Perry could have passed as brothers), but there’s scarcely been a time I’ve watched him during the debates that I haven’t been biting my nails hoping he’d finish without making himself look dumb...and I’m not just referring to forgetting the name of the agency he wants to eliminate, it’s the overall lack of flow, too many inappropriate pauses, etc. Mind you, I don’t think he IS dumb - but unfortunately a large percentage of voters make their decisions based on superficial impressions, and I think Perry’s propensity for vocal fumbling presents a huge disadvantage for him. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t think so.

I wish he was smoother but I look at the whole picture and weigh the pros and cons.

Hopefully, our country isn’t so dumbed down that they can’t look at a man’s heart and record and score it way above Obama’s.
