The US government wanted to remove Hamas from the Iranian/Syrian camp and place it in the Egypt/Muslim Brotherhood camp. Was achieving their goal contingent in getting Israel to accept the release of 1000 terrorists, or would it have taken place regardless, If the latter, it was a window of opportunity. If the former, Bibi was forced into accepting the deal.
By the way Bibi had to agree not to pursue or kill these terrorists after their release. Of course Hamas was not asked to agree not to use these people to commit more terrorist attacks or not to take new hostages.
Finally is the deal to undercut Iran and embrace Hamas and the MB good for Israel. It suggests to me that this is part of the US attempt to produce a peace agreement including Hamas and Bibi is complicit.

DEBKAfile Special Report
[..] Those clauses, negotiated directly between Panetta and Hamas political chief Khaled Meshaal, entailed the shutting down of Hamas headquarters in Damascus in order to undercut Syrian President Bashar Assad, Iran and Hizballah and loosen their hold on the Palestinians. Meshaal who visited Tehran a week ago agreed to gradually downgrade his ties with Iran in return for American patronage of Hamas.
Netanyahu told the Israeli ministers that he had faced a tough dilemma between rescuing the Israeli soldier and national security and a balance was hard to strike. But his commitment to saving Gilad Shalit was absolute. The window of opportunity presented now may never recur, he warned, given the turbulence besetting the Middle East. He therefore asked the ministers for their unanimous endorsement of the swap.
That window, debkafile reports, was the deal the Obama administration had reached with Hamas leaders and their parent, the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhoods rift with Tehran.
The Prime Minister thanked the Egyptian government and intelligence agencies for their great contribution toward brokering the deal. He also voiced appreciation for the efforts of the German mediator and Chancellor Angela Merkel who gave the process her wholehearted support. [..] As to the backdoor diplomacy leading to Gilad Shalits release, debkafile further discloses that recognizing the rising electoral strength of the Muslim Brotherhood and its Salafi allies in Egypts forthcoming parliamentary elections next month, the Obama administration entered into active dialogue with its leaders to draw them away from Tehran and bring them close to the ruling military junta and Washington.
Shortly before Panetta arrived in the Middle East, a US diplomat revealed that US officials had arrived in Cairo on Oct. 2 for talks with Brotherhood representatives. The American side was headed by Prem. G. Kumar, the National Security Council Director for Israeli and Palestinian Affairs at the White House.
This was the first clue that the White House was after a deal not only with the Brotherhood but also its Palestinian offshoot Hamas, part of which was to be the release of the Israeli soldier.
Two days later, on Oct. 4, the US Defense Secretary arrived to seal the accord while in another part of Cairo, the Israeli prime ministers personal representative David Meidan and the commander of Hamas military wing, Ezz a-din al Qassam, Mohammed Jabry, hammered out the minutiae of the prisoner exchange for Shalits release.
Netanyahu referred to the heavy price Israel was paying in terms of security by letting a thousand terrorists walk free scores much Israeli blood on their hands. But he also paid a heavy political price: Israels acceptance of the United States rapprochement with the Egyptian Muslim brothers henceforth dubbed in Obama administration parlance a moderate Muslim force.
Israelcan only hope that this gamble pays off. By procuring the release of 1,000 Palestinians from Israeli jails, Hamas has outperformed is rival, the Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas as the lead champion of the Palestinian cause. After defying the Obama administration by applying for UN recognition for Palestinian statehood, Abbas is now getting his punishment.

Netanyahu Hangs Back from Striking Iranian Red Sea Warships
Aware that this action carried the high risk of a retaliatory missile attack by Iran, Obama sought to win Israel over into embarking on this course by approving the handover of 55f bunker-busting GBU-37 bombs which would be ideal for destroying Tehrans deeply dug-in nuclear facilities and which Israel has for years been asking for. Washington leaked word of the bombs release to Israel on Sept. 23, the same day that Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas applied to the UN for state recognition. He and Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu then presented their respective cases to the UN General Assembly. Focused on those speeches, the media did not ask why Obama chose to arm Israel with smart bombs capable of striking subterranean Iranian sites just hours before the UN session held a critical session on the Palestinian question.
Eleven days later, on October 3, the White House signaled its impatience with Israels reluctance to go after Iranian warships in the Red Sea. It was relayed by US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta who criticized Israel to correspondents aboard the plane taking him to Israel: It is not enough to maintain a military edge if youre (Israel) isolating yourself in the diplomatic arena. Real security can only be achieved by both a strong diplomatic effort as well as a strong effort to project your military strength, he said.
But Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak are as yet reluctant to take advantage of the new go-ahead from Washington for two reasons: First, Israels hands are tied against any confrontation with Iran before the Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit is home and safe as a result of the prisoner exchange deal with Hamas brokered by the US and Egypt this week to rescue him from more than five years in captivity. Second, although Shalits release expected to take place in the middle of next week would free Israeli hands to challenge Iran. Netanyahu and Barak need first to gauge the depth of the Obama administrations commitment to standing firm against the Islamic Republic before sticking Israels neck out. They are anxious to avoid having Washington pull the rug out from under them in mid-operation. More than once during Obamas tenure, Israel discovered at a delicate moment of certain covert or military operations, that the administration had used them as a springboard for renewing Washingtons dialogue with Tehran.

Breaking the Shalit impasse was part of a bigger US picture

US Sets the Scene for Regional Military Action against Iran/ New Obama policy to back regional military strikes against Iran
Obamas opening to the Muslim Brotherhood is jumped forward
1. As a subsidiary of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, Meshal must seek its approval on matters of importance such as releasing the Israeli soldier confined in the Gaza Strip and establishing ties with the United States where Hamas is listed as a terrorist organization. Panettas secret communications with Meshaal were instrumental in opening the Obama administrations door to the Brotherhood in Cairo. 2. Because the Supreme Council of Armed Forces was very active in the negotiations for Shalits release, mostly through Egyptian intelligence chief Maj. Gen. Murad Mowafi, the process broadened out into a three-way dialogue between the US, Hamas and Egypts military rulers, and so helped jump forward Obamas plan for bringing the Muslim Brotherhood into government in Egypt.

Egypt security officers said they intercepted surface-to-air missiles smuggled from Libya through the Sinai peninsula, the Washington Post reported, a day after Egypt reportedly flew fighter jets over certain areas of Sinai without requisite permission from Israel.
What's going on?
This is the first I've heard about a deal ... and THIS deal ?
And Obama undermines Netanyahu domestically - bonus points.
Well since the Obama Coalition of Egypt, Turkey, Gaza nuts from Hamas, backed by Iran and Syria are about to start a war with Israel and we all know and see them doing this right in front of us I accept it will happen and then be left to us to react.
Obama is the enemy of every nation on earth that wants to stay free. Israel is in his way in the Middle East.
Look at action now in Africa, hey lets advise tyrannical Muslim nations (great job Mr. Christian President again and again) on how to kill Christians. That is what we are there for now.
Our military knows. They all speak of not helping much and our boys in the military all know what is up. Officer corp by the way is currently 75% Republican Conservative. Troops are approx 65% Republican Conservative.
We all know, from Military to civilians not watching MSNBC, we are in the middle of Marxist coup and Islamist nuts are their allies.
The fake Wall Street protests that Obama’s people planned and now unfold is working against them and the media.
We all watch and laugh at protesters and their violent actions and words and compare to our nice peaceful Tea Party protests and all can see whats up.
The US government wanted to remove Hamas from the Iranian/Syrian camp and place it in the Egypt/Muslim Brotherhood camp.Yeah, that makes perfect sense, since all of them are in exactly the same camp. Debka I think.
THe Israelis could contact the Digital Angel manufacturer in Minnesota and implant rice kernel size tracking chips in these inmates, or in to ALL inmates in all Israeli prisons.
Problem solved until Hamas can find qualified Eletrical engineers to use equipment to locate, and surgeons to remove, the tracking devices from the released prisoners.

The deal stinks anyway. Shalit is a solider. He knew the risks. His job is to protect civilian Israelis from terrorists. If a single one of the 1000 being released kills an Israeli, perhaps a child, was it worth it? Could he live with honor. I say NO.
Obama is a lying sleeze. The sooner he is gone, the better for the country.
Do Muslims face Mecca?
