The “Disaster Dozen” Top Twelve Myths of Disaster Preparedness

1. “If something happens all I have to do is call 911 and someone will come protect me.” We wish that were so, but the truth of the matter is that help can only go so far, or be there only so quickly. Security, like charity, begins at home and the responsibility for yours and your family’s safety rests squarely on your own shoulders. This isn’t to say that you shouldn’t call for help when it’s truly needed, it’s just to remind you that there will be those instances where you’re on your own for while, especially if the situation is a complicated, expansive, or severe one. Too, family preparedness is one of the best ways you can help your fellow citizen. The less first responders have to help you, the more you’ve freed them up to help others

We are in for some ‘interesting times and I hope many of you are prepared to make it through them, beause between the clowns running the economy and the country and the thugs and anarchists in the street I truly believe that times are coming which we’ve only seen in Apocalyptic movies!

What kind of a times you ask, well I think that we are in for something like the collapse of Argentina ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yerKMQc7-w&feature=grec_index )but with an Arab Winter.

As recent events show (Flash Mobs, UK riots, etc)this things can turn violent FAST! And the US Has a larger entitlement minded population and a much more violent and armed population than Argentina and most arab countries.

I see many many small business wiped out by flash mob looting, and see rape, robbery and murder for murder sake. Many of these ‘yutes’ will think no more about killing you than most people think about stepping on a roach. That will be the test of many. Most preppers I know are Christian people and they will hesitate to do what they might have to do to stop the ‘yutes’. On the other hand the ‘yutes’ won’t think twice nor lose a minute of sleep, in fact they will smile and laugh about it.

Think of this quote which is one of my favorites:

“Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Siege of AR-558 (#7.8)” (1998)
Quark: Let me tell you something about Hew-mons, Nephew. They’re a wonderful, friendly people, as long as their bellies are full and their holosuites are working. But take away their creature comforts, deprive them of food, sleep, sonic showers, put their lives in jeopardy over an extended period of time and those same friendly, intelligent, wonderful people... will become as nasty and as violent as the most bloodthirsty Klingon. You don’t believe me? Look at those faces. Look in their eyes.

Now go look at some of the videos of the riots in the UK and of some of the flash mobs here in the US and look into there eyes.

This will be drive by ‘Bama’ he knows he is going down and he is bond and deterimed to take us with him. If you think you are hearing the sound of a dirge coming from the White House I suggest that you listen again, because what you are hearing is no funeral music what you are hearing is the Degüello (Slit throat )

For those who are just starting or are old hands at prepping you may find my Preparedness Manual helpfull. You can download it at:

http://www.tomeaker.com/kart/preparedness1i.pdf

For those of you who haven’t started already it’s time to prepare almost past time maybe. You needed to be stocking up on food guns, ammo, basic household supplies like soap, papergoods, cleaning supplies, good sturdy clothes including extra socks, underwear and extra shoes and boots, a extra couple changes of oil and filters for your car, tools, things you buy everyday start buying two and put one up.

As the LDS say “When the emergency is upon us the time for preparedness has past.”

Or as the bible says: A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it.
NIV Proverbs 22:3

And yet God told Noah to build a ark and stock it instead of just sending a boat already loaded. And yet he told Joseph to store food instead of just sending it. Go figure

A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions. The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences.

Something I have only one of I take very seriously and as a husband father and grandfather with many depending on me I take that just as seriously. What would you do if your grandchild told you they were hungry and you had nothing to give them?

nyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

Network. Network. Network.

The biggest advantage you can have is other people.

You want people who live close to you, people who you can trust and people who are willing to work with you.

But first you have to find those people.

Neighborhood watch is generally a good place to start but if you have people around you that you have things in common with start there.

Form a bridge club.

Have a block party.

Do what you have to but get to know your neighbors.

Then you can start picking.

Yeah, I know, it is easy for me to say this when I live in a "old" neighborhood and the family has been here for 40 some years. Except I am not a people person. I hate parties. I would rather read or work in my garden. If you gave me a choice of throwing a get together and having a root canal I would pick the root canal. I do it anyway. If everything goes to pot I will need them and they will need me.

It is necessary. So grit your teeth and do it. Even if they don't go to your church, live the way you approve or even if they vote democrat.

If things ever truly get bad only two things will matter.

Can they shoot?

Will they do so to protect the community?

Everything else is secondary.
