Someone recently emailed and asked me to rebut the claim that fascism is a right-wing system.
I have given this question considerable thought over the years; even when I was in college, liberals routinely smeared conservatism as a fascist political ideology. Indeed, how many times have we heard the mantra that communism and Nazism represented the two extremes of the political spectrum, left and right, respectively? This never made sense to me, as I knew that conservatism championed political and economic liberty and that communism and fascism were the direct antithesis of these.

I would add that Fascism is a form of collectivism. Mussolini was very open about this. He used the term collectivism to categorize fascism. He also said:
"All within the state, nothing outside the state, nothing against the state."
Conservatism is about Liberty and it is about Individualism. All political systems are either Collectivist or Individualist.
We're the good guys. We're the ones who care about individual humans. The Democrats just care about the State and the Group. For them, people don't matter -- look at how they've slaughtered over 50 million babies over the past few decades. Individuals?? Who needs 'em? As long as the State is powerful, it's all good.
Conservatism is preservation of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. That is individual freedom. Fascism is anathema to Freedom. End of story.
Communism is international nazism with a class-based scapegoat.
Nazism is national communism with a race-based scapegoat.
Both were reactions to traditional European conservatism, which emphasized a fixed society based on royalty/aristocracy/Church. Traditional European conservatism could not contend with socialist mass-movements as it relied upon a static, subservient society. The last true European conservative states were Soares’ Portugal and Franco’s Spain.
Today’s European “conservatives” are generally center-right parties.
American conservatism is not bound by static, archaic hierarchy like the European variety, and has a vibrant intellectual tradition.
In a straight up argument, Nazis and Communists would easily shout down European conservatives but would stand no chance against American conservatives.
Personal opinion, of course.
Agree on the college term paper point. The book should have been easier to read and understand and less convoluted.
And the Nazi party was socialist through and through as its very name reveals: National Socialist German Workers' Party.
The Ku Klux Klan (the terrorist branch of the Democrat party) is sympathetic to neo-Nazis. Birds of a leftist feather flock together...collectively.
no it is not conservatism
“Communists” such as, for example our Prez or Maxine Waters, like to hide behind the fuzzy cloak of “Socialism,” which is much more socially acceptable. In fact, Communism is just bare knuckles unlike its cousin Socialism which wears gloves over the bare knuckles.
Well described, especially the references to European "conservatives."
I don't know how many times europeans have tried to claim Americans don't understand their conservatives. Hell, europeans aren't even in the conversation. No european state operates under natural rights. No country in the world, except for America, does.
And yet, here, our own people fight agains their freedom, and for totalitarian monsters, with the arrogance and vicious depravity of the Nazi Brown Shirts.
There should be a planet set aside just for these people, so that they can have what they want so desperately. We could put them there, and come back in a century, and we'd have a nice, quiet, empty planet to use. Once we got rid of all the bones.
Glad you posted this, it irritates me when conservatives take on the “right-wing” label.
Communism = Left Wing
Socialism = Left Wing
Fascism = Right Wing, also known as nationalistic socialism
Conservative = Neither left nor right wing.
Stalin isolated and ridiculed his enemies, much like today’s Demagogic Party, and differentiated them by calling them right wing. It’s like the Crips calling the Bloods hoodlums instead of gangsters which is what they both are. Same is true for Commies, Socialists, and Fascists, they are all gangsters competing in the theft of others people’s wealth.
BTW, 0bama is not a fascist. Fascists love their country.
Mussolini got his big break in the Italian Communist party.
“BTW, 0bama is not a fascist. Fascists love their country.”
Hmmmm....I never considered that.
Henceforth, I will cease and desist calling Obama “Fuhrer”. I’ll resume calling him Chairman Obama.
Will view shortly.
My favorite book of all time, despite the fact that I did not like Jonah’s writing style.
Weird, huh ?

You would certainly think so, but we’re dealing with idiots who believe 2+2=5 and that helping al-Qaeda in Libya is a swell idea.
From Mein Kampf:
“The NSDAP [The Nazis] and the DSP [The German Socialist Party] had arisen with the SAME ULTIMATE AIMS [emphasis mine], yet absolutely independent of each other. The main fighter for the DSP, as I have said, was Julius Streicher. At first he, too, had a holy conviction of the mission and the future of his movement. But as soon he could recognize the greater power and superior growth of the NSDAP clearly and without doubt, he ceased his activity for the DSP and the Working Federation, and called on his adherents to join the NSDAP...”
