here’s just no telling when Armageddon will occur, nor is there a date scheduled, yet, for a zombie invasion. However, all this talk lately about the debt ceiling and a looming financial apocalypse has scared a lot of people. Many of them have done very little to prepare and are wondering, “Is it too late?” You’ll know it’s too late when your pantry is empty, right along with grocery store shelves, no water comes from your tap, there’s no electricity, and fifty zombies are coming up your driveway. Until then, you have time to prepare! Here is The Survival Mom’s Quick Start Guide for getting prepared in a hurry.

I don't have much of a sweet tooth but I am feeling good I picked up a couple of bags for the stash. $11.77 at Costco. Think about it.

BTW, Thanks, Kartographer, for keeping this ping list.

Our local Wal-Mart now has some generic good sized bags of trail mix (7 oz., not bad tasting) for only $1.

Right! On the occasion I get a bag I always feel like it was a good deal. Fair price and no skimp on the good stuff.

Not so good for long term though. Hard candy would be the best, I'm guessing. Even after 10 years if it got all gooey you could sill enjoy it. And by that time the wrapper would be edible too, lol.

Think about two ratios:

- Calories per dollar if budget is tight - Calories per cubic foot if storage space is limited

There are three levels of preparedness:

a) to avoid scuffle in the food lines if here are short-term shortages

b) to sustain yourself if the food prices skyrocket

c) long term survival if everything goes to hell.

Not in particular order:

Remember this as a mantra:

One can of sardines IN OYL and a chunk of bread is one day of survival.

Average built man needs approx. 1400 calories a day to be able to work and lose weight very slowly. Woman can get along with 1000 calories. When not working, sleeep as much as you can to lower caloric requirements.

Calculate calories requirement for all family members.

Diabetics should prepare to be able to eat 5-6 times a day in small chunks to keep blood sugar flat.

Buy bulk grains and beans - sacks of beans and rice. Cook separately and eat them together. Cubans survived under such forced diet for 40 years and they are healthy.

Buy olive oil in metal containers. A chunk of bread or pasta, garlic and tablespoon of oil will keep you going. Poor Mediterranean people sustain themselves on it as a principal diet.

For folks in countryside or suburbia, make cages and start feeding rabbits and hares. Excellent source of protein. You can trade them for other things.

Buy sacks of sugar. Can be stored for years in dry climate. Sugar is not needed, but provide instant energy.

Ditto for Peanut butter.

Regular SPAM as much as you can buy,

If you prefer corned beef, read labels CAREFULLY and buy only brands with NO TRANS FATS. In Canada I as able to find only one brand - Holiday. All others are loaded with trans fats. Don't poison yourself.

One can of SPAM/corned beef is enough for the family of 5 if combined with pasta, rice/beans.

Dry cured ham or beef jerky for a treat once a week.

Ration one ounce of dark chocolate per person per day for microelements.

Buy bulk almonds - 5-6 almonds per person per day, for the same reason.

Marinated olives. Several olives per person per day.

Tea, instant coffee in large quantities - if it's cold it is a must to keep the spirit high. Keep in ziploc bags.

If you can find, get pork lard in large containers. It can be used to conserve roasted meat if fridge is not working. Easier to keep than butter and way healthier than margarine.

Corn flour to make corn bread - last longer than wheat flour.

Stock up on condiments - bulk peppercorns, dry garlic powder, cayene pepper. One ounce of salt per person per month.

This is important - plan some luxuries to keep the spirit high. Chocolate, cheese etc.

None of above is junk food, it will not ruin health of healthy person.

Stock up on razors to look sharp :-)

Buy professional barbers hair cutting tools - one set will pay for itself for one or two haircuts.

Get a two pairs of good boots - one steel toe, one waterproof for walking.

Get a decent but non-descript type of clothing - navy/black hoodie, peacoat, watchman's cap etc. If the going gets really dangerous, and you have to venture out, it is not smart to stand out in any way - be at the middle of the tub curve.

Buy a bicycle if you do not have one already. Install front basket and saddlebags.

Get flashlights, the kind that does not need batteries.

Permanent markers.

Plastic sheets, tarps of different size.

Duct tape.

Good quality hunting knife. Hand tools.

Get long range Motorolas for all family members, cell phones may not work. Thnk ahead how you will charge them.

Get health check NOW - to know where are you in this moment. If you have health condition, get advice how to survive with reduced medication or no medication.

Digitize all important documents, title deeds and let a family member keep a copy. Make dogtags/bracelets for small children with your SS number. Make plan in case you got separated how to get in touch again.

Again, keep your spirit high. this is the weapon. Sleep is also a weapon, as well as keeping warm.

Start selling things that you do not need, buy things that you might need.

Consider buying hand operated reverse osmosis water filter.

All mentioned is not a waste of money, can be put to good use even if there is no calamity.

Stock up on razors to look sharp :-)

OMG! I recently bought one of the old fashion safety razors, and I will never go back!

The blades are a little hard to find, but because the metal frame holds the heat with each rinse, they last much longer than disposables and are vastly more comfortable, to boot.

” they last much longer than disposables “

Don’t throw those used blades away - even when they’ve become too dull to shave with, they’re still sharper than any other cutting implement you’re likely to have around the house...

Coat ‘em in light oil, and save ‘em - you’ll thank yourself later... ;)

Your best plan would be to load up your MBR, pocket some extra mags...then set up shop on the front porch with the bottle of cognac and watch the show. Pick off the zombies as they get within 200 yds.

You can use the rotten veggies as a close quarters combat weapon.    =;^)

30 years ago, we were being visited by a friend and his new Thai wife. We decided to go out to dinner and when Jym heard this, she told us she was sick of “meat and bread” (meaning burgers) and she would cook for us.

I had next to nothing in the house. We found 1/2 cabbage, a few eggs, a half pound of ground beef and some spices/herbs. I may have had some rice available, but I don’t recall.

Jym shredded the cabbage, fried up the beef, mixed up the eggs, added some herbs and spices set up a double boiler out of a large pot and a bowl and we had a wonderful egg/veggie/beef dish that was like a savory custard. It was an education and I have never forgotten that particular meal.
