Passenger bound and gagged and flight diverted after violent clash on United Airlines plane

A passenger on a United Airlines flight had to be tied up and gagged and the flight diverted after he refused to come out of the bathroom and then turned violent when confronted by staff.

The United Airlines flight 944 to Frankfurt, Germany, from Chicago was diverted to Cleveland on Friday night after the flight attendant found that the large man had been in the bathroom for almost 30 minutes and refused to come out.

When he eventually did he started screaming at the flight attendants and put one in a headlock before wrestling him to the ground.

That is when some of the passengers on board were asked to help.

Joe Shulfer, of Woodstock, told Newsradio 780: 'The flight attendant just ran up to me and literally grabbed me by the shirt and said, "You need to come with me now".'

By then three men were already wrestling with him and they managed to handcuff him and tie up his feet. Then he started spitting and swearing.

Moral of the story, don’t use the bathroom for too long or you’ll be dragged out and hogtied.

I’m confused. I thought the Amish eschewed modern conveniences such as air travel.

“Had to be bound and gagged” or was bound and gagged?

I would be happy to beat some dumb ass who needs 30 min on a flight in the bathroom and can’t explain politely with a pretty good reason. Really how stupid can one be. (or dangerous)

I am surprized that the flight attendants had to ASK someone to help, I am 6’2” and 220 pounds and I of been on that like white on rice. Hell if I am going to sit passively and watch the plane get crashed, after seeing what happened on 9-11

Well there was that little bit about putting a flight attendant into a head lock before he had to be tied up.

Was that the 777? Wires hanging from the ceiling? They better check behind all those mirrors. I used to make the mirrors part of my pre-flight check even though it wasn't required.

Of course there is no name attached to the article, but there is a photo of a dark-haired, bearded man lying tied up on the floor, face blurred out.

Poor man doesn’t even have a name. No wonder he was upset

99% chance his name is Mohammed.

1% chance his name is Barack Hussein.

Hmmm, I wonder what the guy’s name was? I don’t mean to stereotype, but I bet it was something like Jebediah, Joseph or Matthew. Damned Amish!

Just discovered a rather disturbing phenomenon yesterday. It seems that Zantham Gum, used to replace gluten in all sorts of food products, particularly low carb/low cal diet foods and those targeting people with gluten intolerance, can cause an allergic reaction in some susceptible people.

The "reaction", if we can call it that, can trap you on the pot FOR HOURS.

So, where would you find Zantham Gum on an airplane these days?

Well, let's start with those funky crackers they distribute as a replacement for peanuts!

I would suggest folks not jump to conclusions about whether this guy needed to go to the toilet or if he is going to win his lawsuit!

You should also pay attention to "what goes on" for a few hours after consuming anything with Zanthum Gum just to see if you have an allergic reaction.

Maybe it was the lack of peanut snacks that drove the guy crazy. A person can only take so much, you know.

If his name had been Joseph or Matthew, it would have been published.

More likely his name was Mohammed or Ahmed.

Stomped to death instead of restrained would be appropriate.

Yes, though peanuts are still on some flights. When I flew from NH to Pittsburgh by way of Balt., I noticed we got peanuts on the way to Balt., but from Balt to Pitt., it was honey roasted peanuts all right (Southwest. Ding!)

On my way back I noted a video screen at Pitt. International Airport with helpful info for travelers from the TSA, as we stood in line to go through security. At one point it expressed the consequences one would face if they joked about having a bomb, etc.

Or this, try doing a 14 hour flight from Mumbai with extreme stomach problems having to use the bathroom every half hour on the way back.
