California’s drunken-sailor budget syndrome

Imagine you’re irresponsible. Now imagine you’re the people in charge of California’s government budget. But I repeat myself.

Imagine you have run up your credit card and borrowed beyond what’s reasonable. Imagine now that you have too little money because you have a spending problem. Then imagine you get a windfall bundle of cash. What would you do? Pay some outstanding bills? Pay down your credit card?

Nah. You’d spend it. . .

Sorry, but the title is an affront to every sailor that has had too much to drink. When a sailor runs out of money, he stops drinking. The state of California and the United States just keep on drinking.

It’s not drunken sailor syndrome, as in the need to blow off steam after doing hard work. Californians don’t think like that.

The problem is niceness.

Save the environment? That sounds nice. No new drilling. Oil sounds mean. No nuke plants. Nukes sound scary. No building where there are endangered mice. I love cute animals.

Cut the budget for schools? That doesn’t sound nice! I love kids! And teachers! If you don’t give them more money every year, it’s mean.

Public services! I love firefighters! And cops! And lifeguards, and prison guards! It would be nice if they made six figure salaries and had huge layers of bureaucrats running them.

Poor illegals! They need free health care, tuition assistance and housing! I don’t want to pay a few cents more for lettuce and tomatoes, so we’ll pay billions more to support our less than legal friends.

The problem with California isn’t that we love spending money. It’s that we can’t say no to emotionally sensitive spending ideas. Everyone wants to be Santa Claus with every single issue that sounds nice to help out with. Nobody wants to go on record to tell the people no, we can’t afford that, even though it sounds nice.

When a sailor runs out of money, he stops drinking.
As a former drunken sailor, I can attest to that.

. . . .reminds me of a favorite RR quote:

We could say [Democrats] spend money like drunken sailors, but that would be unfair to drunken sailors.

It would be unfair, because the sailors are spending their own money.

Reading the replies on these sites at some links nauseates me. What a wasteland.
