John Cornyn Over Lamar Alexander for Senate Whip

Jon Kyl's sudden retirement announcement has set off a domino effect on the ambitions of several Senate Republicans.  When Senator Kyl retires in 2012, he will be vacating the position of Senate (Majority, most likely) Whip, in addition to his Arizona Senate seat.  Conference Chairman Lamar Alexander (RINO, TN), the 3rd ranking member in the GOP leadership, has announced that he will seek the Whip position.  Senator John Cornyn, the Chairman of the NRSC, will challenge Alexander for that key leadership role.  Also, if Alexander vacates his current position as Conference chair, there will be a race to succeed him.

For most of the past few months, we have focused on the House and its committee and leadership structure.  As jarring as the flaws of the Republican leadership in the House are, the Senate is much worse.  It is therefore imperative that we begin pressuring Republicans to make the right leadership choices in 2012.  This will be especially cogent as the GOP is likely to gain control over the Senate.

Being that the Whip is charged with rounding up the necessary votes for our side, it is vital that the new Whip vote the right way in the first place.  Ideally, we would want somebody in the mold of Jim DeMint or Jeff Sessions.  However, if it becomes a choice between Lamar Alexander and John Cornyn, as it appears to be, the decision is simple.  Although John Cornyn is far from perfect, Lamar Alexander is a RINO who has no business representing such a conservative state to begin with, much less serve in leadership.  Let's compare their voting records.

Here is a list of major votes over the past few years in which much of the Republican Conference was split between those voting with the Democrats and those voting with conservatives.  A vote that is highlighted green indicates a vote with conservatives.  A red mark indicates a vote with the Democrats.  As you can see, Lamar Alexander is only one step above Olympia Snowe.  He has an especially egregious record as it relates to corporate cronyism and the bailouts.

We need to begin our battle for the Senate leadership before the 2012 elections.  A good start would be an unambiguous declaration: No Lamar Alexander for Whip!  Then, we ought to focus on unseating him in 2014.

Lamar (!) Alexander has been such a huge disappointment. He's a really arrogant SOB, drunk with power and his staff is downright rude, too.

Tennesseans, Lamar (!) has gotta go come '12!

Yep. A choice between Alexander and Cornyn ought to illustrate the RINO state of the Senate. (The House too given today’s news about the failure to defund healthcare. Trent Lott lives.)

I pray you're right about Cornball. And, I agree that Alexander is a big RINO, but Cornyn is only slightly better. His voting record only improves when he's up for re-election...ala Juan McShame. He's been embarrassing to Texas both as senator and as chairman of the NRSC.

Can't we do better than either of these old fools?

Yeah, it is a real sorry state of being that we must choose between these guys. However, as you can see, there still is a difference.

Yes, Lamar Alexander is a weak-kneed pantywaist.

Always has been, always will be.

His heart is in the mushy center, or actually somewhat to the left of it. But he has enough political wiles to tell him when he absolutely can’t vote the way he wants to. He was on the fence a long time during one of the Jorge Arbusto amnesty pushes until outraged constituents would show up at his community meetings. Were it not for the pressure, there is no doubt in my mind that he would have voted for amnesty.

He always votes for Dim Supreme Court justices (like the wide Latina and the Harvard butch) because he says the Senate should defer to the President’s choice unless it is clear the candidate is unqualified.

It will be a black day if Tennessee can’t throw him out in 2014.

Lamar is a RINO! He’s my senator I should know. He is not up until ‘14. Bob Corker is our next RINO target for ‘12.

Cornyn is planning to cave in on a mass amnesty bill with McCain, Graam and Kyl, according to Juan Williams. Alexander is a ridiculous liberal. WHY ARE THESE TWO PATHETIC RINOs THE ONLY CHOICES???

.................................................Cornyn    Alexander
Confirmation Sonia Sotomayor       No     Yes

Well that disqualifies Alexander right there. Sotomayor is the most unqualified justice to ever be confirmed. This idiot is unqualified for traffic court and is only where she is because of racism. In addition, she should have been rejected along with her disgraceful opinion against the New Haven Firefighters that the SCOTUS shot down hard. Any Senator who voted to confirm her is not only fit to be Whip, but should have been stripped of any Chairman posts as well.
