This is the largest single threat to America, as a nation.

Not just our way of life. Not just our standard of living.

The fact we are sending everything which made America great and strong to other countries, could very truly lead to America’s destruction.

It is time for conservatives to realize this awful truth, and begin to take action. Our beloved nation itself, is in danger.

Stop stalling. Stop waffling. Stop pretending it’s ok.

We need to act. NOW.

You’re right. Too many people still put unions and union “workers” up on pedestals.

Steel Production Feb 2009:

Unsurprisingly, steel output in the U.S. also fell in February. The U.S. produced 3.8 million tons of steel last month, a decrease of 54.2 percent from February 2008, the World Steel Association says. Comparable declines were seen globally as world steel output fell 22 percent in February.

In the European Union, there were production drops of 31.6 percent in Germany, 35.7 percent in France, 35.7 percent in Spain and 39.9 percent in Italy. Brazilian steel production decreased by 39 percent last month from February 2008 totals, and both Russia and Ukraine saw steel output fall by 32.1 percent and 33.6 percent respectively.

Iran and China were the only two countries who reported positive gains. Iran steel production gained 15.9 percent from February 2008 to 900,000 tons. China produced 40.4 million tons of February's overall world production of 84 million tons. The country reported an increase of 4.9 percent from last year's same-month total.

Just to recap in Feb. of 2009 China made almost half of the words steel, 10X as much as was made in the USA.

Will you continue to whine about unions, when America is destroyed by a superpower communist China?

Enough finger-pointing.

America. First. NOW.

I think the real death to American manufacturing was the legal framework for environmental policy, labor, and tax code.

You have firms being sued left and right for BS, you have to hire morons to get you quota of minorities, you have to make sure your firm supports some queer cause and the gubbermint has 26 various entities all looking to justify their existence and grow their programs you have to make sure you're in compliance with........ They will tax the crap out of you and vilinize the CEO, bad mouth you if you're making a profit......... To me, the US is simply adopting a way of thinking that will guarantee mediocrity and poverty in it's future and it's all a cultural phenomena in reality. A culture that is becoming more technology critical, socialist and rejecting the Judea Christian value system.........

LOL

Wait till the Free Trader cabal here on FR reads that post.

One of 'em is steel salesman and claims steel is making a serious comeback in the U.S. Of course, he's probably selling Chinese steel at a rate of about ten to one but will never admit it.

So stop complaining. Stop finding “reasons” for the destruction of the greatest nation in the history of our planet.

And start being part of the solution.

We need to stop bickering, stop sending American jobs elsewhere, and start fixing this before we are all dead. Destroyed by our enemies.

Dead.

Its a far more subtle process than just “unionization”....

Imagine that all those overseas factories had no secure seaways from which to distribute their product.

the US Navy provides that security....in return for which the Federal Gov’mt REQUIRES of those factories, owners and country’s .....to buy US T-bills.

This is why we enjoy 4%-5% interest rates. We essentially force the world to pay the US tribute to ensure their productivity-to which the American Taxpayer is the major contributor.

That an American Citizen needs to pay any taxes whatsoever under the above arrangement is testament to the magnitude of Congressional and obsession with control.

All Congress needs to do to keep this gravy train running is ensure the pre-eminence of the US Navy-something that may be beyond the ability of the current RinoCrats.

I vote with my dollar, you?

The problem is that I make up maybe 10 percent of the population. The majority of Americans will buy what is cheap, they are not concerned about where it comes from. They really don’t care about the environment outside of their personal sphere, they really don’t care about human rights, the fact that a nation is an enemy to us etc etc etc.

Walmart, Target.....all made in China where you have forced abortions, forced labor, oppression, censorship, suppression of religion, practically no environmental policies and they spew the crap out, copyright infringements (one pro business cause Hollywood saw worthwhile standing behind) yet the stuff gets bought. Americans don’t give a crap. They don’t care if something is made in Iran, if it’s cheap and looks pretty
they’ll buy it.

At some point the US is going to end up just like the Old South, exporting food/cotton for machinery or simply the things we need. Then in the event of a war, we will lose mainly since we looked down on engineering and other practical things (like being ‘in trade,’) just like the Southern aristocrats did. Such are the ironies, God wouldn’t watch our back since I think I read that it was Napoleon that said “God is on the side of the strongest battalion.”

We need to change our attitudes towards engineering and medicine and then we’ll experience an upsurge in prductivity and industry. but even our education system isn’t geared towards learning, but geared towards socializing/networking and getting a degree that will secure a ‘position’ not a future. These days it’s about having a job ‘title’ to throw around in society. So many pointless degrees and it’s all about appearances.

Succinct and to the point.

There is a toxic attitude toward jobs, that jobs are supposed to just suddenly pass out paychecks and then cater to the sensiblities of workers with landmine personalities.

What is the unionization rate among certain key industries, I.e. Auto workers........

My wife is a school teacher. Not all teachers are unionized, and if you look at education in a broad picture probably only a small percentage of educators are really unionized, yet the teachers union is very powerful in reality. It’s a game with averages. If you and I eat an average of one sausage a day but I eat two, you’re going hungry...........

The unions are powerful enough to influence political policy making and that makes them part of the equation (problem). A good example of this is the new health care law or the GM bail out etc where they pushed for sweet deals and got them. The rest is about semantics........ The unions ARE influencing the political process and that’s undeniable.

You are so right! Americans need to be the forerunners in this battle for our economy and our country. Patriotism will go a long way in turning the tide.

Indeed, if you want to fight for your country, fight with your pocketbook. Buy the car that keeps the most money in America. Think twice before you pick up that piece of cheap Chinese crap. Support American companies and manufacturing whenever possible.

I think it’s time that parents demand safe, American made toys for our children and stop the import of inferior, dangerous, lead laden junk. Just don’t buy it.

If the American people would just stand up and demand quality, American made goods, then investors would pony up the money to boost the manufacture of them. This would improve our economy and the job market more than anything.

In addition, get rid of the unions, the biggest obstacle to American productivity that exists. Their time of usefulness has come and gone.

There’s NOTHING that Americans can’t do as well or better than any other people on Earth. We just have to gather up the incentive and the courage to take the market back. Saving America for our children ought to be the best incentive there is.

A World Order and Global Governance might be necessary for the rest of the planet, but WE are AMERICANS!

“The majority of Americans will buy what is cheap, they are not concerned about where it comes from. They really don’t care about the environment outside of their personal sphere, they really don’t care about human rights, the fact that a nation is an enemy to us etc etc etc.”

And some of us buy where it is cheap because if we don't, we cannot buy at all. Also, some of us buy from Chinese & other cheap sources because there is no way to tell just exactly where much of the goods we buy come from. Especially in complex machinery such as cars, and computers. Not everything is labeled with point of origin, and even when it is, there is no way to tell if they tell the truth about where the stuff was made.
