How to stump your friends: What popular Christmas song mentions Satan?

At this time of year, Christmas songs seem to stir our hearts and minds with thoughts of Christmas cheer, jingle bells, sleigh rides, snowflakes, Santa, Rudolph, and of course the birth of Jesus in a manger long ago. And although many people bemoan the evils of over-indulgence, unbridled commericalism, as well as the absence and rejection of Christ during the Christmas season, few make the direct connection to the deceiver of the world - Satan himself. But did you know that one very popular Christmas song actually mentions Satan by name?

This odd little piece of trivia is one I like to present at this time of year. Maybe you can do the same for your friends and family - especially if you get a kick out of watching their faces contort as their holiday brains scramble for the only right answer.

Although some people will give up quickly, others will genuinely try to figure it out. Here are some hints if they decide to ask.

Hint #1 It is a traditional Christmas carol, not an obscure song you have never heard.

“God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”

God rest ye merry gentlemen.
Let nothing you dismay,
For Jesus Christ was born on Christmas Day,
To save us all from Satan’s pow’r
When we had gone astray.

That video is deep in symbolism... Annie Lennox looking like a witch gyrating and strutting proudly through the video then coming to an angel with her own face and kneeling down. That is not a celebration of Christmas, it is a mocking of it.

And her rendition of the song sucked too. Sad because she has a good voice.

Every time I see your handle at FR, the first name that pops into my head is one of my favorite actresses, Delta Burke. I don’t know why the name of McGarrett pings Delta to my mind, but it does!

That line should read ‘For Jesus Christ our Savior was born on Christmas Day’

It took me about 2 seconds to recall the actual line and another 2-3 seconds to remember the song it came from.

Certainly did a number on it, didn’t she? I disagree as far as the rendition of “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” itself, think it’s very striking and beautiful, as far as the arrangement. And her voice, it’s really something, gorgeous, the classical training shines right through.

The video itself is another matter. Sort of Dickensian, medieval, snowy English countryside. Trouping along, whether they’re a-wassailing or are supposed to be an analogy for the Magi, well, they’re heading toward the star glowing over the town, the conclusion is hard to avoid.

It’s loaded with somewhat pagan symbolism, but I was actually OK with it until they arrived to the Holly King. When that thing comes onscreen it disturbs me, I feel it in the pit of my stomach, it’s just wrong. You can see our Santa Claus in that old “god” too, which adds to the unease.

When I first heard the song, my first thought was, well bless her heart, maybe that old über-lib Annie Lennox has changed. Then I searched out the song online and found the video.

Nope, she hasn’t changed a bit.
