Donald Trump Favors “25% Tax” on Chinese Goods; Considering a Run for President – Video
Freedom's Lighthouse ^ | November 5, 2010 | Brian

Here is video of Greta Van Susteren’s interview with Donald Trump, who said he is considering a run for President in 2012 because of the condition of the country. Trump said one of the key problems America faces is the movement of so many jobs overseas, and the rise of China. “We are rebuilding China,” Trump said, and “our economy is getting killed. . . . “We’re losing our jobs to China.”

Trump said he would “tax Chinese products” as a way to level the playing field with them. The Chinese have “manipulated their currency” to gain a competitive edge with the dollar, even though the quality of their product is woefully inadequate. “We don’t have free trade right now,” he said. “China is ripping us like no one has ever ripped us before.” . . . . .

When asked about a possible bid for President, Trump said:

“I’m thinking about it for the first time in my life. For years, people have said, ‘Are you running for President – why don’t you run for President.’ For the first time in my life I’m actually thinking about it. . . . Somebody has to do something, and I don’t hear people coming up with answers. . . . This country has to be rebuilt. This country is in serious trouble. This country – it’s no longer respected like it was. We love our country – we’re proud of our country, but our country is not the force it used to be. It’s no longer respected like it used to be – and in fact, just the opposite – people laugh at us. People laugh at the stupidity of the people running this country.” . . . .

I guess Trump would like to start a global trade war.

I agree with everything he said in the interview. Free trade is not sending jobs overseas in order to employee slave labor. Free trade must recognize the disparity in wages between countries and adjust prices accordingly. The party that first recognizes this will be the party that is embraced by the American people.

China regulates capital flow by not allowing other countries to buy its debt. This allows them to control their currency exchange rate.

We do not need a tariff. We need to reciprocate. China should not be permitted to buy our treasuries and anybody that so sells them, even through foreign intermediaries will be subject to criminal penalty.

There - that ought to make a few heads in Washington explode.

Wait. Isn’t Donald Trump like the only guy in history who ever lost money running a casino?

In the same interview, Trump admits that he “buys a lot” from the ChiComs.

Using “Donald Trump” and “running for President” in the same breath is comical.

I used to say "Would you rather have a trade war or a REAL WAR?" That's often the choice when one looks at the 1930's.

The Chicoms have a HUGE VESTED INTEREST in the welfare of the US. And they do, indeed HATE that fact. Nonetheless, it is a fact...

Even considering a tariff is silly considering how much China already owns us. If you really want to take power away from China, pay down the debt that we owe to them.

I saw his rant on the tube the other night, as always, Trump proves he’s not the smartest on economics. He may be a good salesman, for which he has amassed a fortune, but economics is not his strong point.

Many here will agree with him, there are plenty of isolationists on these boards, who think that imposing high taxes on imported goods will force folks to buy American.

Indeed, they might. It will also folks to go broke faster than any inflation might. Right now I know many folks who are surviving because of Wal-mart. They can’t afford union made products.

And what happens once the unions are given a monopoly on products you must buy? Will the quality of those products increase? Hell no. They will be back to building cars like they did in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Will the prices go down? Hell no, they will raise the prices of their products to fund the liabilities they currently cannot afford.

As it stands, unions are sinking because of these liabilities, they would LOVE to have the US tax to death imports, so they could double their prices. And then, after that, they’ll double them again so they can make more promises to union members.

If they want to decrease our trade deficit, get rid of the harnesses on our own business that China does not have. Get rid of the prowling lawyers that make doing business here expensive as hell, get rid of the EPA, get rid of the tons of regulations and lower our own taxes on American made goods. How about that?

Trump appeals to the lowest common denominator amongst New Yorkers, while the rest of us in heartland are sick of being the experiment of the week for their goofy, failed several times already-projects.

Like it or not, we are in a global economy, and to compete on this global economy, we must either insist that other countries hamstring their business the way we are hamnstrug, with regulation, inane costs of doing business, and eco-terrorists from within our capital, OR we must diminish those same factors to the level of our competition.

But it won’t happen, because there are too many who think America is too powerful, and they do their best to bring us down a few pegs. Unfortunately, our POTUS and those in power right now are the ones thinking that way. They have a UN attitude, and believe all the worlds problems will just be solved if we play with one hand tied behind our backs for a few years. Screw them, because wanting America to be “taken down a few pegs” would have been considered treasonous when I was growing up, and in my mind, it still is.

Trump could be Obama’s “Ross Perot”. He runs as a third party independent, syphons off enough Republican votes and Obama dances right back into the White House in 2012.

Taxes aren’t going to solve anything. Trump is a big-mouthed idiot. He is too tainted from Hollyweird to even consider getting a vote from me.

Trumps fail to see the negative side of the relationship with US-China trade. Its not all positive for China. China citizen are screwed in this relationship because of very high inflation. They also have lower standard of living. US gain better standard of living and lower inflation

All this does is hurt all the poor/consumers in the US and reward the few US companies.

What kind of idiot thinks that shipping American jobs overseas in order to hire slaves can result in anything other than us becoming a third world country? By the way, Mr. Globalist, what happened to all those high paying jobs the “new world order economy was going to bring us?

pfff, I see a more nefarious act then that scenario. Both the dems and RINOs will conspire to disallow a TEA partier on the ticket. The RNC will claim he/she is not electable and won’t allow them on the ticket. Therefore, there will be a 3rd party candidate, a TEA party candidate.

The RINOs know they will lose, but just like I think McCain tossed in the towel on purpose, because it was “the dems turn to win”, the RINOs would rather lose than have a real patriot in charge, one that would upset the the network of corruption and ‘across the isle” deal making, gerrymandering, pandering, and general screwing of the American people. Neither party in charge wants that. They can deal with each other at their Georgetown dinner parties, what they can’t deal with, is a TEA party upstart.

Mark my words. The McCains of the party will take another one “for the team” (THEIR TEAM) to prevent a real conservative, a real patriot from getting close to the presidency.

I agree. It is not a free market if any side is manipulating anything from currency value to government support.

If a free market is competing with an unfree market, then it is proper for those who are being injured to take steps to address the problems an unfree market is causing them.

If that is a tariff, then I’m in favor of it.

Seriously, if I’m selling a widget for $3 and getting a profit of $1, but my neighbor gets a government subsidy of a dollar and sells his widget for $2 with a profit of $1, how is that a free market?

Or, what if the government gives them serf-labor that saves them $1 a widget, doesn’t that amount to the same thing?

Duncan Hunter also believes in free markets and said he’ll protect them. I agree with him.

Additionally, he says that we should keep all forms of industry in our country, especially of the heavy variety, as a matter of national security. We shouldn’t be relying on our aircraft or tanks being make all or in part in some foreign land.
