Rangel kept insisting with a straight face that only the poor & minorities were dying on the front lines in Iraq because the U.S. economy was so bad they had no choice but to join the military.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Up yours, Rangel! This rings of the VietNam Era and I despise your using the hippies rhetoric!

So you want America to cut and run? The terrorists have made it clear they want to KILL us and turn America into Saudi Arabia unless we take care of them and establish a pro-American regime in Afghanistan. Get the Taliban out get our guys in.

The first Peacetime Universal Military Training act was passed in 1948 by a Pubbie Congress, so the idea in not original with Rangel. They felt that UMT would shape up the soft youth, Little did they know the would be drafting troops in three years for combat.

That’s my point. With all the anti-American anti-war garbage in the media today think about how many youth would desert their platoons if forced to serve. Let the true patriots volunteer out of the love for their country not a bunch of spoiled liberal’s kids who spend all day on facebook who have never honored the flag n their lives.

You have a plan for this? I'm sure the Joint Chiefs would love to hear it.

What else can America do? Cut and run? Let the jihadis and islamofascists take over? Let the same people who attacked us on 9/11 go free?

Enough of the liberal fiction that draftees were low life malcontents. Draftees fought and won World War II. They turned back the Chinese hordes in Korea. They won the Vietnam War until the democrats turned it around. They won the Cold War.

The draft was what recruited the volunteers for the Air Force and Navy. The draft is what brought together American men of all classes, incomes, religions, races, and regions into a coherent unified fighting force.”

For too many - not all, but too many - Americans, their support for the all volunteer force translates to “better them than me - I’m too good/smat/important to be doing that military crap.

This is a marginally constitutional issue. Does congress control the nature and make-up of the military?

Yes.

Can they require that I show up at the local drill field with 50 lead balls, powder, and patch? Yes, or today's equal.

Can they require that I serve in a non-combat role? Maybe.

Is it a bad idea to use force to make people learn military things? Yes. (Use a gun to force someone to learn to use a gun. What could go wrong?)

For practical logistics, strategic, and tactical reasons, the draft sucks. Any military that uses needs to be crushed.

Never got called.

I sure wasn’t going to join a peacetime army when I had a business to run.

You are mistaken, tovarich. The draft was used in WWI and WWII primarily as a way to organize the flow of entry into the military.

It was the only way that recruiting stations didn't get over-run on Dec, 10.

I have served since you have. I don't want to serve next to someone that doesn't volunteer.

And all races, classes, incomes, religions and regions DO volunteer today.

Enough that recruiters turn them away.

Thank you for your service, but things have changed.

BTW, you can throw boiling water on a modern frozen windshield today without it busting as well.

The Democrats/Socialists see the US Military as an affront to their social spending projects and float these types of legislative acts in order to gin up opposition to the military.

Several weeks ago, Barack Obama stated in a speach that in 2011 the deficit hawks now critizing him about spending will be complaining about his budget cuts. Unsaid was that he will attempt to cut the DoD budget to less than bone, abrogating his primary duty as Commander in Chief to provide for the security of the nation. Watch this scenario unfold as the next year unfolds. The Dems and are very sick people, and will trade your and my security for an increased opportubnity to pillage expanded social programs for themselves and their cronies.......

Listen, I'm all for the troops and I believe we need to finish the job in Afghanistan and Iraq. But FORCING people to serve is NOT the answer. The gov. has already taken over education and health care and is taxing us to death via the FED. I don't want the gov. telling me that I have to serve or my future kids that they'll have to serve. That is not what the gov. is for. We already have enough patriotic volunteers who want to serve out of their patriotism and love for America. I don't want whiny liberal's kids to be defending me. I want everyone in the military to be proud patriotic Americans.

I mean could you imagine if all the kids at Hampshire College right now were drafted to Afghanistan? They'd be spending more time helping the Taliban win then defeating them! Is that what you want?

BINGO! That's another reason I support Ron Paul for president. He knows when to stop spending. The socialists/democrats will drive us ten times as bankrupt as we already are.

Rangel has been talking about this for years, since the beginning of the Iraq War. There is a method to his madness.

In the 60’s, when the draft was in effect, it was easy to turn public opinion against the Vietnam war since everyones kid was in jeopardy. By continuing to beat into the consciousness of general population that the war was bad, and their kid was at risk of dying, they were able to turn the tide of popular opinion against the war.

Today with the all volunteer army, only those who volunteer are at risk of dying. If the left manages to reinstate the draft, they hope to reenact the popular uprising against the way that was seen against Vietnam. I heard Rangel out of his own mouth say as much on CSPAN during the demonstrations against the Iraq war. All of the old anti-war activists from the 60’s are chomping at the bit of a renewed draft. Noam Chomsky has been a proponent of a renewed draft. Furthermore, they want to see young people not suited for military drafted. They want to see atrocities, they want to see officers fragged. They want to relive all of the old 60’s memories.

It wasn’t peace time. It was a war and you didn’t fight in it.
I don’t know who comes on this site but I abhor people who shirked the draft during the VietNam War.

BTW, my brother served two tours, while you were building your business, A$$h0le.

In our community there is a high school from the more affluent area of town that has had a large number of grads die in Iraq and Afghanistan. It kinda blows away that backdoor draft theory.

Yes. More of a reason why the socialist liberals want the draft back. They know public opinion will be on the side of our enemies if they think their kid is going to be the one sent out there.
