How some counties in Michigan euthanize their pets can give the state a black eye and hurt tourism, said State Rep. Rick Jones, R-Grand Ledge.
Jones sponsored House Bill 6042 that stops the state from using "pet gas chambers" to euthanize cats and dogs at shelters.
The bill just came out of the Agriculture committee and is awaiting a second reading.
"It doesn't do any good to have this archaic system of a gas chamber for dogs and cats," Jones said. "It is starting to get up on blogs around the country. We want to be known as a tourism center. We don't want to be known as 'gas chamber Michigan.' "...

Back in the day, my dad who was already working two jobs to support the family took on another side job as dog keeper for the town. He lasted three days, when it came time to euthanize one of the dogs,my father quit the job, and brought the dog home with him.

They are not gas chambers, they are vacuum chambers that suck the air out and the animals die of lack of air. They should get their terms correct and they should suggest BETTER alternatives if they are going to take away one method. It is impossible, unfortunately, to keep every stray animal that is brought in to shelters alive for the length of their natural lives.
Any state congressman with an R after his name should only be concerned with two things. First, stopping the rats from creating new laws. Second, removing bad laws from the books. Anything beyond that and he is a waste of space.
That’s what we used when I was younger out on the farm, but I suppose we would be called insensitive killers now.
There is nothing wrong with using a “vacume chamber”.

Yes, I have been in one. Every millitary aircrewman has. your troop inside, plug in your airmask and the drop the pressure to equal 30,000+ feet. Then you remove your mask and breath the thin air... first you loose fine motor coordination, then you get a little giddy, then your vision starts to blurr and you put your mask back on (or the attendant does it for you).
The air feels fine as you breath it, there is just not enough 02 in it to support life.

The one thing they leave out in that equation is that the drugs used to euthanize are controlled substances, requiring the tech administering them to be trained and licensed.
The turnover in that job is nearly constant, meaning that there is an ongoing problem, and expense, of finding new people and getting them properly trained.
Animal control agencies are usually on the bottom of the totem pole when it comes to funding. Making the transition to lethal injection may not be financially feasible for many of them.
