I grew up in Detroit, Michigan and left that city when I was 13 years old. It was bad then. The common joke among "Michiganders" that "flew" South in search of jobs and opportunities is that we hoped that "the last person who leaves turns the lights out." That was back in the 1970s and the situation is even worse now. With unemployment at more than 20 percent, the actual population is now less than 1 million people. In fact, it is roughly half the size it was around 60 years ago. It no longer benefits from government programs designed for large cities and the situation is so bad that they are literally tearing down complete neighborhoods in order to reduce crime and make room for other "opportunities," whatever those end up being. In that city's current tax, regulatory, and labor environment, it is not likely to attract anything except more of the crime that has made it a wasteland.
Cleveland, Ohio is another city following a similar path as Detroit. ....

Detroit’s situation is appalling. I seem to recall Rush mentioning that it’s been run by Democrats for the last 40 years.
Sometimes I wonder if the big old cities such as Detroit and Cleveland can be saved.
Have the youth gangs just completely taken over? Will we really see any major private business investment if the menacing youth gangs scare good people away?
In some places where old bad neighborhoods have been revitalized and refurbished, the liberals complain about the evils of “gentrification”, meaning that new private investment and new residents have driven out the old residents. To the liberal, this is bad.
If gentrification and renewal can happen in Detroit, will the liberals be happy? Or will the bemoan the shrinking of the ghetto?
Mr Price and Cypress Times should use a spell checker. Furture?
Also, its nothing that we don’t already know. Government, even if well intended, kills cities. They raise taxes, impose regulations, etc driving businesses out into the suburbs. This leaves an urban core of unemployed, crime, etc. The fact that the majority of the crime is committed by minorities is off limits to the MSM.
Washington DC is over 50% minority. Crime is terrible, but largely restricted to east of Fort Steven Park. But note the crime in the DuPont Circle area.
Point: even DC will be overtaken by crime as even government starts relocating outside the district.
Detroit is a left wing success story and they are making it national!
I lived in Houston, Texas when you all arrived.
There were so many people from Michigan in Texas that it was common for the natives to have bumper stickers that said, "Native Texan."
Of course they will. All they need is some Obama money. From his stash. lol.
Cities such as Detroit are really at a crossroads. What will happen in their future? It seems that they have a choice, either to get private investment and drive out the bad elements which have turned big areas into war zones, or just let the whole city go “ghetto”. If the whole city just goes “ghetto”, then good decent people, of all races and backgrounds, will continue to vote with their feet and avoid such places.

And wait for recession/depression to take control. How will all those Fannie/Freddie millionaire uber liberal chardonnay snipping, salmon eating, creeps feel as their kids are murdered and raped?
Detroit, a showcase of how liberal policies and inaction ruIn a city.
Liberal racial hustler types such as Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton want to see new private investment in the cities, but fail to understand or realize why there is “dis-investment” in the cities by the private sector.
Detroit’s problems run far deeper than the decline of the auto industry. Sharpton and Jackson have nothing to say about a ghetto culture which has led Detroit and other cities to where they are today. Economic decline and old buildings and all that are just one small piece of the puzzle.
The entitlement slaves in Cleveland and other such cities will never see the return of their cities. Detroit is dead. Cleveland is on it’s death bed.
But the people keep voting democrat. There was an article in a newspaper up here in Cleveland. It pointed out how Houston, Texas turned it’s economy around by lowering taxes and being business friendly.
Cleveland has the opposite philosophy. If you want to do business in Cleveland, make your payoffs and be ready for high taxes and government interference.
Corruption and stupidity are rampant in Cleveland. It’s spreading throughout Ohio, Youngstown, Cincy, Toledo, Lorain, Dayton.
Once the balance of ignorance and entitlement have gone too far there is no coming back.
I used to live in Cleveland. I moved to Nashville for work. If Cleveland wants to turn it around, they should drop the state and local income taxes. In Cleveland, you are taxed where you live and where you work. If you are a small business, you are taxed in every city that you do business in. The people there are taxed to death and there is nothing to show for it. The infrastructure is horrible, the schools are in bad shape.... A whole lot of money gets taken from the incomes of the citizens with no return. Get rid of the state and local income tax and I would bet that things would start looking up.
A darned shame because I have a place in my heart for the old city.
Your picture shows the intersection of Franklin St. and Riopelle, in Detroit's Warehouse District. The building on the right corner used to be a bar named Ma's Place, owned by a buddies mother, who was also a Detroit Police Sargeant. The Warehouse District used to be a thriving night-spot back in the 70's-80's. It will never happen again, in Detroit.
Think "East Saint Louis". That is how bad it can get.
The Rev-rund Jackson knows exactly why there is "dis-investment" in the cities by the private sector; he informally hinted at it a few years back.
If he ever publically and formally stated it, that would be the end of his gravy-train.
