I have a couple of things to tell you about today. First off, we are excited to announce that Windows 7 has sold 150 million licenses to-date. As I’ve said before, Windows 7 is the fastest selling operating system in history with 7 copies of Windows 7 sold every second. Earlier this month, I published a post about Tami Reller’s keynote at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch U.S. Technology Conference. One of the points that stood out for me was her comment that between companies actively deploying and evaluating it, approximately 75% of enterprises are looking at Windows 7 for their organization. That’s amazing! And of course people continue to be excited about the features and benefits of Windows 7, and the PCs that our partners are delivering for Windows 7. Vista?
Being an old IT guy with many old gov contracts i am sort of surprised it’s still not Win98.
from experience with lots of fed contracts they are really not that advanced when it comes to computers and their OS’S.

Appreciate the comments. I will certainly take a look. No doubt part of my frustration is the lack of familiarity. I finally did get Sketchup to save a file. It's definitely a W7 issue. I can't just run the program like I have for the last 20 years. I have to right-click and select "Run as Administrator", then it will save the file normally. I find that very weird.
Right click on the icon, select Properties. Then select the Compatibility tab; this will let you tell Win 7 how to run the application that is not Windows 7 specific. Probably need to tell it to run in XP mode.
That should solve your problem!
Note that this allows you to run applications that were designed for Windows 95 - you have 15+ years of backwards compatibility built-in. That’s a pretty nice thing to have...;)
My design engineers refuse to use Vista and will not upgrade any of their computers until the Air Force finally gets with the program and gets Windows 7. We warned our IT guys that they will walk out if Vista is forced on them.
I have to use to Vista being an admin guy, but I've been hammering the IT guys to get me Windows 7 as soon as possible. Me personally, I'm still using XP at home but that's because I'm still using a P4, 3.4 GHz, 2 GB memory system. I also have programs that won't run under Windows 7, but if I ever get in a position to purchase a newer computer I will use Windows 7 on it.
So, if I go out and buy say, a new Dell, and it comes with Win7; that counts even if I wipe the drive and install something else?
BTW: rather than “upgrade” to Win 7,; I went BSD Unix with an OS X wrapper.

Why they released a POS called Vista. To lay the ground work for a need to buy something to replace it. Just bought my first netbook with W 7 Starter. Absolutely will wipe the disk and install XP Pro. W 7 looks nearly identical to Vista which looked like crap. Nothing is where it was all the new crap has nothing to do with getting work done.
Yes I’m pushing 70 and don’t have a free month or two to learn a new operating system every year. :<(((
Haven’t a clue - their profit and revenue have both outpaced Apple over the last 5 years (in absolute and percent growth), and they pay a nice dividend. I think it’s more about the mindshare they’ve lost, not financial issues or long-term success of the company.
You can disable the UAC to get rid of that right-click>run as administrator.
I meant the bozo’s in the Air Force who choose Xp over vista even when the system they are installing it on runs vista extremely well.

You’re welcome - hope that does the trick! There’s a LOT of functionality buried in this OS, it’s slick, works great, is stable, secure, and I have yet to find something I cannot run on it.

Who bloody cares about how many copies of OS-X sold? Are you saying that the first decent release of Windows in over five years -- into a market in which Microsoft enjoys 90% share, might NOT outsell the 5-10% competition? Why not compare against the latest Ubuntu release and crow about how Win7 outsold "Lucid Lynx" by 100:1?
Are you that insecure about Windows?
Win7 is a fine operating system. Don't waste time comparing it to Apple's offerings on the basis of number of copies sold. For-q-clinton is right to ask about the installed base. OS-X has about 1/10th the installed base of Windows in the US, and about 5% worldwide.
If Win7 DIDN'T outsell OS-X by about 9:1, it would be losing (in terms of relative penetration in its segment). I'm sure you can do math. When you're the market leader, you shouldn't weaken your own perception by comparing to distant minor competition.
Of course, you hate Apple with an unbridled passion, so it shouldn't surprise me that you take every opportunity to poke at OS-X with a stick, even when it makes you look stupid to do so.
My suggestion is that you focus on the strong points of Win7 (of which there are many) and not compare it to something which can't possible compete in number of copies sold.
Whichever one, it sounds like it can't cut the Smustard.

What you say about Win7 is true in my experience, except for the "slick" part. It's functional, but it's not slick, software-wise. It's NT6.1. Microsoft is gonna have to throw out the ancient, creaky NT codebase before they can write something that I'd call "slick" from a technical point of view.
On the other hand, it is glitzy, I'll grant that. But that's the first thing I turn off when I set up a Win7 system -- I get rid of all that glitzy crap, because I use Windows to do work, not wank over some damn translucent windows.
I did find one app that doesn't run on Win7-64, but I'm pretty sure it's the app's fault. I've contacted the vendor to see what they're doing about it. So far there are a number of older app installers that won't install on Win7-64. That's not too surprising.
Overall, great OS.
I gotta ask you, though. Do you write marketing copy for Microsoft? I'm not saying you're a MSFT shill -- I'm just saying you sound like one sometimes. :)

Caveat: It's not really "god", it's just the way it ought to have been in the first place.
They could ditch about 75% of the dialogs in Win7 and it would speed things up considerably when adjusting configuration. But god mode is a fine workaround.
I think it's around 50,000,000 machines currently active running OS-X, most of which are on the internet, most operated by non-techies, virtually all running with administrative priv and no third-party anti-virus.
Why? You thinking of starting an OS-X botnet? It's a huge untapped resource... :)
Seriously, I think OS-X is approaching 50 mil which puts it at between 5% and 10% of Windows installed/active base, depending on whether you look at US or world, and whether you count pirated copies, etc. etc.

Not at all. I've got a couple Macs for the same reason. I'm fundamentally a Unix-head, and tolerate Apple's restrictive GUI because OS-X is the best Unix operating system out there at the moment.
My suggestion is you get VMware Fusion for your Mac(s), and run Win7 or XP in a VM. That works great, and gives you the best of both worlds without having to dual-boot.
Assuming you can find XP drivers for the devices in the netbook, you should do fine.
Win7 is just Vista the way it should have been. It is literally just another release of Vista (which is NT6.0 -- Win7 is NT6.1).
Win7 really is a very good OS. But if you're more comfortable with XP and can get it to run on your netbook, that does sound like the right choice for you, at least until Microsoft pulls the plug on XP support in a couple years.
