It is reported that after his trip to Pakistan in 1981, while he was in college, he decided to use the name Barack Obama.
He was still legally Barry Soetoro by the second year of college because his mother got her divorce from Soetoro that year and she named the eighteen year+ child as still a legal expense to Lolo Soetoro in the court pleadings.
