Why the former Massachusetts governor should run health care reform.
As I see it, there are three principal requirements for the job. The first is experience in management, business, and organization: maybe someone who's worked as a management consultant, an entrepreneur, and an executive in both the public and private sectors. The second is the ability and capacity to commit: someone who isn't likely to have any pressing obligations for the next several years, and who has enough cash that he or she doesn't need a large private-sector salary. Third is relevant experience in implementing a large-scale health-care reform program, ideally one that involved using an individual mandate and the private insurance system to attain near-universal health insurance.
In other words, this sounds like a job for Mitt Romney. He may be the only man in America who meets all three criteria.

What they just passed was what he passed in Massachusetts. Not to mention doing such a thing makes it absolutely impossible for him to pose a serious challenge to Haley Barbour in 2012.

If Obama makes the offer and Romney accepts, then Republicans will not nominate him, and the MSM can spin that a Republican was responsible for the upcoming socialized medicine debacle.
If Obama makes the offer and Romney declines, then the MSM can say that Romney is not a bipartisan polician, that he avoided public service to pander to the far-right wing.
Either outcome harms Romney. That is the only reason Newsweek ran the piece.

Romney commit?
Nobody even knows what state Mitt Romney lives in or considers home. No one even knows what his political beliefs are.
Sounds like Newsweek is promoting Mitt Romney as a can do guy that is middle of the road, not an ugly right winger.
That is how the media sells Republicans that it likes and are backing, it is not how they attack conservatives.
As I said, that would come if he refused the job, which he almost certainly would.
There is a candidate that the media constantly works to paint as an evil right winger that is a threat to America and everything decent, it isn’t Mitt Romney.

The media always favors the weakest, most liberal of the viable candidates for the Republicans so that they can beat him, or at least keep the conservatives out of the running.

Sure, but Newsweek's primary goal is to keep Obama in the White House, not to help his RINO opponents. I am guessing that Newsweek has calculated that Romney is the primary threat to Obama's second term. If I am right, this offer would be one way for Obama to neutralize his competition. It's a lose-lose for Romney, and Newsweek knows it.
The strategy the media is famous for is trying to destroy conservatives like Palin and keep them from winning the nomination while trying to push forward the candidacy of a weak liberal like Mitt Romney to win the Republican primary.
My calculation is that the media clearly favors Romney over the Republican that they attack with tooth and nail, (Palin).
The media will continue to favor and promote Mitt Romney to elevate him for the primaries.
