On April 30, 1789, George Washington, standing on the balcony of Federal Hall on Wall Street in New York, took his oath of office as the first President of the United States. "As the first of every thing, in our situation will serve to establish a Precedent," he wrote James Madison, "it is devoutly wished on my part, that these precedents may be fixed on true principles."

Mr. Presdient we all to the last American owe you a debt which may never be fully repaid.
Thank you
George Washington, a real President.
And the real story is so much better than the cherry tree b/s that I don’t know why they never really taught it.
Happy Birthday Mr. President
My husband and I just finished watching John Adams (2008) on Blu-ray. That was one of the best moments of the series, when Washington was inaugurated, gave the oath of office and added “So Help Me God” (which was not in the written oath).
The greatest of patriots, the greatest of gentlemen and the greatest of Americans. How far this nation has fallen. Look at todays’ White House occupant. An embarrassment and a disgrace.
I am not a Revolutionary War scholar, but the readings I do on that subject leave me stunned by the religious faith, humility, intelligence, leadership, and courage of President George Washington.
On Washington’s birthday, I thank God for this great man of our past and ask for another to come forward to make this nation the “shining light set on a hill” once again.
You are right! George Washington is a type of man that does not even exist today.
