A military officer can resign his commision at any time[requires processing time, could be months]. He of course would be required to pay back said education if provided by the Military.

As for enlisted. No matter the years you’ve signed up, your on the hook for a 8 year contreact[Active, and inactive total].

I think you are correct about resigning your commission however, if you go to a Military academy you are on the hook for five years. If you go to other ,say medical then you are generally on the hook one for one for however many years the Military paid for your school plus one.
