No disrespect to the locals, but they may have been happy to take a well-paying grounds-and-buildings job with the US Gov, and also honor the fallen GI's. I have had the privilege of meeting a few Europeans from the War Years, and do not doubt that many still hold the GI close in their hearts.
My perhaps acerbic comment was more about keeping circumspect distance from the Euro-governments in the post war years.

we don’t need anyone to remind us on that.
As one of only a handful of politicians ever in history angela merkel recently spoke in front of both houses.
She said that she personaly will never forget. Germans, Belgians, French and English are not only well aware of the past but are keeping - actively - the memory alive.
(ok there’s always some stupid folks that don’t care about history or books in general)
So noone has to apologize.
