Here’s the link. On page three of this article is a link to the “gawande” article. He went to McAllen and talked to the doctors himself. On page 29 is an exhibit which shows the medmal insurance premiums paid by year since 1975 and the related payouts. These numbers are from the insurance companies themselves.

This is probably the first time anyone has ever provided you with the actual numbers, so my question is, why haven’t any of the supporters of tort reform ever bothered to give people the actual dollar amount of this horrible scourge?
parsy, who says you have been played
I seriously doubt that medical malpractice insurance costs a Doctor only 1/2 or 1% of a Doctor’s gross annual income, in fact I would bet on average, the monthly cost exceeds rent. Doctors order a lot of CYA tests to cover themselves against lawsuits.
I haven’t “been played.” I’ve been to McAllen, and know the score. The numbers of illegal foreign nationals living in that community and feeding from the public trough massively skew any possible numbers you could have.
But, to whatever extent the numbers you cite are correct, you’ve made the main point quite clearly anyway that McAllen is not a normal case. Which means, of course, that the leftwing Democrat in question is using an extreme case to try and impose his socialist views and policies on the rest of the country.
Extreme examples make for very bad public policy, no matter how you slice it.
