Media Bias, The New Scary Spin And The 9.12 Numbers
TheCypressTimes.com ^ | 09/13/2009 | John G. Winder

Yesterday I wrote that much of mainstream media was ignoring the fact that later in the day a massive march, or rally if you prefer, was planned in our nation’s capitol and discussed bias in the media (both liberal and conservative bias). Today, I want to look at the aftermath of that rally, who showed up, what the mainstream media had to say about it all and how the spin is developing from D.C. The new "spin" will be really scary.

First, let’s look at how many showed up. “Media” estimates range from 60,000 to 500,000 to around 2 million (yes, 2,000,000). Those estimates, the language employed, and the visuals chosen for use in reporting the rally and representing the people gathered, vary greatly based solely on bias.

It’s worse than that. I’m just gonna post this as an editorial in a minute.

In all the coverage from yesterday, I’ve seen two (2) signs with either a Nazi swastika on it or Obama as Hitler.

Of course ABC news is going to find them.

They’re easy to find if you “magically” know just where to look for them.

The isolation has begun. The cameras have identified the faces.

The MSM should do some checking into obama’s czars to see what they really have advocated. But I guess that would be way too much trouble for them. Apparently they agree with Chris M that their job is to promote obama and help him “succeed.” What a good little press corps.

Here's where it gets good and CNN comes after YOU big time.

Spellman elaborates: “In the crowd it is really a different message when you get out there and talk to the people. You know, it’s a much…sort of darker thing. “

Lemon: “Explain ‘Darker thing’”. Yes. Yes. Do explain!

Spellman: “It’s sort of the death panel thing taken to several degrees past that where the president is going to set-up death camps, where they’ll do forced sterilization, and, and, and the government is taking over the Internet to stifle speech, there’s gonna be forced vaccinations. These are not things after some 30 Tea Parties – These are not one or two people. This is people we hear over, and over, and over, and over again. Really there’s sort of disinformation or misinformation out there that it really creates a significant part…in these towns across America where we went. It really is out there, Don. And its, its, its --- it gave me pause more than once going across the country with the Tea Party Express.”

-- As good a guess at how the left will attack next as I have seen anywhere.

I wonder if he’s ever wandered through a typical liberal protest, and talked to random people.

The press will spin but the lawmakers have to know that we mean business.

I’m pretty darned sure that most have never received as many communications from their constituents as they have recently, they know the people are concerned.

Don’t stop contacting them, EVERY time there is another commie, spendthrift, new tax, pro abort, pro amnesty, anti-American bill or thought floated by Obama, we need to let them know how we feel.

There is absolutely no doubt that yesterday got their attention.

I hate to poop in the punch bowl, but I was there and my best guess was that it was in the range of 70,000. I tried to picture a full football stadium and compare the crowd to that. To my eyes, it was about the same.

I remember how we've joked over the years about the "million" man march and hope we don't fall into the same trap. 09/12 was certainly a very successful event, but we should be realistic about the numbers.

Interesting to compare the coverage of yesterday’s march with coverage of things the media agrees with.

From May of 2000, the New York Times wrote:

“Organizers of the Million Mom March said their crowd numbered 750,000 in Washington; the number could not be independently confirmed as the federal Park Police no longer gives crowd estimates after years of controversy over how many people attend events like these. It appeared to be one of the largest gatherings on the Mall in recent years, and it clearly was a showing that gladdened the hearts of longtime gun control organizers.”
And the New York Times story about yesterday's larger crowd, the report was:

The demonstrators numbered well into the tens of thousands, though the police declined to estimate the size of the crowd.
Oh, and the story isn’t on the main page at http://nytimes.com/, nor at http://www.washingtonpost.com/.

The comparison is the same at the the LA times. and the Washington Post. Nothing on the main web page today about yesterday’s event in Washington DC. I was actually shocked that it isn’t news in the Washington Post.

Oh, and the story isn’t on the main page at http://nytimes.com/, nor at http://www.washingtonpost.com/

Nor, locally here at the New Jersey Shore, is it prominently featured; this morning the Asbury Park Press (a Gannett publication) has relegated the AP "Thousands March" article to about 10% of page 25A. The balance of the page is advertising. And not a word on the editorial page this morning.

I had hopes for the Press when on Saturday morning they published a fair and balanced account of the Tea Party Express rally in Toms River on Friday evening on Page one (about 3,000 participants estimated; there were at least 2K when I had to leave). Must have been a clueless junior editor on duty that night, who did not know enough to bury that story. Or, wonder of wonders, a real journalist who has managed not to be spotted as a liability to the left yet!

I just shut off my Direct TV, no more watching news on the TV! Actually, I haven’t watched TV news in years, every since I found out about the internet and conservative sites, especially FR. The News media are in the bag for Bozo, they want communism because they think somehow they will be exempt, the darlings of the state. What they don’t realize is that in communist countries, there is only one news outlet, and they don’t make money. These same so called intellectuals will be among the first to go.
