Does anyone live in a home with a Cold War era bomb shelter?

Posted on 08/21/2009 8:29:21 AM PDT by Nikas777

I would like to ask if any Freeper lives in a home with a Cold War era bomb shelter?

If so, what is it used for now? Still an emergency shelter or just for storage?

The reason I ask is I live in Queens, NY and growing up in the 80s and 90s I still saw what I assume were Cold War era early warning sirens - painted Green and buildings with the fall out shelter radiation sign.

I visited some of these areas recently and the apartment building that had that used to have that fall out shelter sign no longer displayed it.

I thank you in advance for your time in any response I get.

PS: If you did live in a home with such a fall out shelter I would love to hear a brief recollection of your memory of it. Also welcomed are those that have built or are building a modern survival shelter. How are you building it? Home made? Pre-fabricated? Costs, etc.

There were air raid sirens about 1/2 mile from my house when I was a kid. They’re gone now. Also had a shelter in the basement of the high school I went to.

Did that air raid siren look like those fire alert poles (for lack of a better way to describe them) but painted like a military green?

They were on telephone poles and painted yellow, IIRC. This is in Nevada.

Your question brings back memories of my childhood in the 50’s when during the alarms that would go off while we were in school; we would have to get under our desks ...like that would somehow save us...shezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...

And every Saturday, they would “test” the sirens at noon...
we always thought that “if” the Commies wanted to attack they would do so at noon on Saturday because no one ever paid much attention to the sirens.

If you are ever in the South Jersey area check out the little community known as New Kuban off Rt. 54 in Buena,N.J. All the old Ruskies have bomb shelters next to their homes. The old Cossack cemetery behind the church is a neat piece of history too.

"World democratic opinion has yet to realize the alarming implications of President Vladimir Putin's State of the Union speech on April 25, 2005, in which he said that the collapse of the Soviet Union represented the 'greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century.'

I was told by a teacher that the reasons we lined up outside the class room and faced the wall - while the teacher held the attendance book in hand - was so that after the bomb fell they could identify our remains which would be lined up in neat rows.

True story.

No, but there are quite a few ‘storm’ shelters under ground around. I believe they were constructed because of the tornado risk in Texas and Oklahoma. My granny had a neat one in her back yard in Tulsa. I remember going down there as a pre schooler.

I know this doesn’t answer your question...LOL!

Yup!
Mom is still in the house we grew up in, and the “shelter” is still used as a pantry.

My area of interest is in history. I did not assume I would get a nutty response to a general question regarding this - then again maybe I should have seen it coming seeing as some may equate bomb shelters with kooks.

I promise I won't rat you or any one else as to the location of your underground hide out to the Freemasons or the Illuminati.

Maybe you are trying to find out if people are preparing??? You could be a government snitch...

That's awesome. I consider such things as living history. Even if it is a pantry now.

May I ask from what state your mom is in? Even though Vendome thinks noobs (thanks for making me feel welcomed, Vendome - if I am a noob are you an oldie?) should for some reason - can't ask that question.

Here is an interesting link.

http://www.undergroundbombshelter.com/

I grew up on a SAC base in the UP of Michigan in the 50s and 60s.

The school rooms in the schools on base had access doors to the utility tunnels running under the school. During the Cuban Missle Crisis each student brought in a pillow and a blanket. We had drills where the teacher pulled up the trap door in the floor, set a chair in the tunnel and all the students filed in followed by the teacher who closed the door.

Also, in the homes, the area under the basement stairs was used as the shelter.

Really? Seriously?

I mean you think that may be a likely possibility or are you just assuming elaborating on that is what the other poster thinks?

“we would have to get under our desks ...like that would somehow save us...shezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...”

Everyone like to make fun of those drills, as if all atomic bombs were going to detonate directly above the school house. But while the city I lived in the early sixties may have been miles away from ground zero, the shock wave may have still shattered glass or otherwise damaged the building and yes, getting under that desk may have saved me.
