Lockheed Martin Test of JLTV Military Vehicle Goes Wrong with TV Crew on Board - Video

Here is a video report on a new prototype military vehicle made by Lockheed Martin that flipped over while carrying a news crew. The crew was on board as Lockheed was showcasing the safety and maneuverability of the new JLTV, which they believe surpasses the Humvee used for so long by the military.

Just prior to the test drive that went wrong, Lockheed officials had been bragging that in 50,000 miles of test driving, the JLTV had never flipped over. But, inexplicably, it flipped over shortly thereafter with the news crew on board. No word yet from Lockheed Martin as to why it flipped.

Everyone in the JLTV got out alive, with no serious injuries. . . . . (Watch Video)

The title is a little disingenuous here ... it was a TV Crew member that was driving the vehicle.

THAT is the stupidity here; that the Lockheed Martin management would let a camera man drive the vehicle.

Why they let news reporters drive the vehicle, I’ll never understand.

It was actually the News 10 reporter driving, the cameraman in the passenger seat and a Lockheed Martin employee in the back.

In a related story, Lockheed Martin announced a new program manager for their JLTV program and a new Vice President for Public Relations. /Sarc

Certanly a good candidate to replace the armored HMMWV especially since it flips over in exactly the same way (hard corner at speed with a turret on top).

Yes and a bargain at only 4 times the cost.

The vehicle tipped over on its left. They forgot how left-weighted reporters are. They should have put Michael Moore in the right seat for ballast.

Like when NBC was putting explosives into GM gas tanks and then did a story about why GM trucks explode on impact

Not that I’m defending the cameraman who was driving, but nearly every military vehicle is designed so that, in an emergency, any random grunt can get in the thing and drive out of a killzone. If this thing flipped with J. Random Person driving, knowing that it was an unfamiliar vehicle but presumably understanding the mechanics of driving a vehicle (steering wheel, gas, brake, etc), then I’d say a fair share of the blame lies with Lockheed for apparently missing a test or blowing some QA procedure on a modification they made to the vehicle (i.e. how much extreme maneuver testing did they put it through with perimeter loads like turrets and add-on weapons systems?).

You know, I actually missed that in the story. Thanks for the clarification. I had not finished my first cup of coffee!

But they met their schedule. That's what's important isn't it?

You're absolutely right. They let someone (presumably) unfamiliar with the handling characteristics of a big, heavy, relatively tall vehicle drive it over a course intentionally designed to challenge the vehicle and driver? Bad decision, not necessarily a bad vehicle.

For all we know, the news flunky that was driving it has never driven anything bigger than a Honda Civic, and never been any further off road than the Burger King parking lot... Lockheed-Martin may be a business rival, but I've gotta say it would be unfair to ping their vehicle for this. Ping on their on-site management for letting that guy drive...
