Sounds like an ISO audit. ;~))
And don’t forget Two-Buck Chuck!
Seriously: when we lived in L.A., we shopped at Trader Joe’s every week. Unfortunately, Trader Joe’s can’t operate here in Texas because the Baptists who control everything have laws in place that make it a crime for grocery stores to sell liquor.
I know, it doesn’t make sense to me, either, but hey, that’s Baptists for ya...
I am not opposed to the free market at all. I’m not an advocate of shutting down Whole Foods. Phony liberals need a place to shop and Whole Foods is a perfect place for them to waste their money.
BTW, I would like to point out it is the Liberals who are always busy at work trying stop or shut down or force companies like Wal-Mart to conform to their ways.
Except the methods of the modern dairy industry lead to a vast overabundance of such things as estrone sulfate & progesterone in quantities shown to be harmful to humans.
Anabolic steroids & creatine are naturally occurring, too. It doesn't mean it's safe for baseball players to pump their bodies full of them.
Hormones in meat? There probably is, the animal naturally produces hormones in the body.
Again...(plus, cattle can get plenty of artificial hormones).
The entire planet and our bodies are chemical factories. Fear of pesticides is irrational. There are hundreds of things that can take you. Chemicals and pesicides in the food you eat comes in at perhaps 1938th place, many places behind the stress of worrying about imaginary threats like chemicals and pesticides in food..
Apart from that, when you can slap an organic sticker on it and get gullible people to pay twice as much, do you suppose there is just a bit of corruption in the organic food world?
I like Whole Foods although I don’t buy food there often because it’s so expensive. Their prepared foods are fantastic! Yesterday, I bought grilled chicken wrapped in bacon. Also, Curried Chicken Salad. It’s so much easier than having to make it myself.
And not all of their produce is organic although it is top notch in quality.
Also, I like their vitamins and buy bath products from them ... like Pine scented bath from Switzerland.
To all of those who are worried about pesticides etc... on your food. Is your avoidance of these foods based on a feeling, or hard science? In other words how do you know there are any harmful chemicals left on your food after normal exposure to the environment in the fields and after a quick rinse in your kitchen? And then, if there are any traces left, how do you know they are any more harmful than the natural chemical toxins that most plants produce themselves? I am honestly looking for information here.
The one thing I like about Whole Foods is all the free samples there. You can practically have entire free lunch there.
Bingo. Nailed it!
Yeah, and they have a good cheese department. Love the selection of olives ... about a dozen varieties. Breakfast pizza is great and the Caesar Salad.
One of the last times I went to DNC Foods was a few years ago...there are two items I buy there, that I’ve not found anywhere else...Blackstrap Molasses and a special type of instant oatmeal. Took me forever to find it, with all of their stock.
When I got out of the store, two kooks tried to get my attention, asking me about making it a Happy Thanksgiving. That wasn’t the kooky part...the kooky part was the reason why....they were standing behind a large poster that said “IMPEACH CHENEY”, and they were trying to garner signatures. I wanted to tell them both to bugger off but I wasn’t in the mood for the confrontation.
It was then that I made the connection between liberals and Whole Foods: both sound and look good, until you get the bill.
In the Whole Foods where my wife likes to shop, they stock books like Algore’s “Earth in Balance”. They also have liberal tee shirts with peace signs.
Every time my wife says, “I’m going to Whole Foods do you want to go, honey?”
I always say, “Just a minute, dear.”
Then I quickly put on my “Imagine No Liberals” tee shirt.
I agree with you, they are talking health benefits FROM nutrition, they are not addressing the health risks FROM pesticides. And the organic produce lasts longer too, so there is a financial advantage despite the claims.
And it doesn’t address taste. A lot of that stuff just plain tastes better.
How about celery that isn't sprayed with pesticides? Celery, like all plants, has chemical defenses. It uses a carcinogenic chemical (psoralen) to respond to an insect attack. Celery can boost the amount of this chemical in its flesh by up to 100 times when it is attacked by an insect. An organic disciple might look at the insect eaten leaves of a celery plant with great satisfaction, even though it's going to cost him a lot more money, knowing that the plant is free from insecticide.
What Mr. organic man doesn't realize is that the "organic" celery is far more toxic and cancer causing than the cheaper, insect free celery down the street at the chain supermarket.
Organic proves P.T. Barnum knew what he was talking about. People are willing to pay more for perceptions and I suppose that supports a lot of people, especially small farmers, who cater to these perceptions. More power to them. They've found an innovative way to separate people from their money.
To clarify, I wasn’t being snarky in my previous comment, just stating my opinion. FWIW, I buy most of my organic stuff (when I buy organic stuff) at either Walmart or Costco. Whole Foods is a bit too expensive and new-agey for me.
"Organic" growers use pesticides and chemicals even though you may think they don't. They use organic pesticides and herbicides. Because organic means containing or consisting of organic compounds all artificial pesticides are organic.
Organic farming uses organic fertilizer. Great, right? It is except for the fact that organic fertilizer has to be broken down in the soil into an inorganic state before the plant can utilize it. Organic farmers rely on bacteria in the soil to accomplish that. Sounds like this would make it hard to determine the correct amount of fertilizer required and that presents an entirely new challenge to growing "healthy" food. Some organic farmers use manure to fertilize. Imagine the incredible number of pathogens that exposes to the produce.
Same for hormones. Much ado about nothing. Fact is non-organic grown food, in many cases, can be safer than organic.
I think I will follow the advice of the person who told me to buy organic celery. Regardless, thanks for the info.
