Ever since Sarah Palin announced her resignation from office, conservatives have debated on the merits of the choice, including in the lengthy comment threads at Hot Air. Even the Washington Examiner, one of the leading new lights of conservative media, has found itself at odds internally over Palins actions. Editorial page editor and longtime conservative stalwart Mark Tapscott says that conventional wisdom cannot explain Palin:

I hope I am wrong, but I can’t help thinking it was a mistake for her to resign as governor of Alaska.
Her enemies might be able to use this effectively to cast her as a “quitter”, if she ever runs for elected office again.
Conventionally speaking, John McCain was so far superior to Barack Obama in experience, in good judgment, in character, that he should be president today.
How’d that work out for him, O Merciful and Compassionate One?
I'm with the crowd that wished Palin had announced her intentions, but I get the impression that she doesn't know yet. She might be exploring a presidential bid, but doesn't want to announce that yet because she might see the Senate as a fallback option. Give her a couple of months to get her footing and some speaking fees.
Her enemies might be able to use this effectively to cast her as a quitter, if she ever runs for elected office again.
She has certainly been called worse than a "quitter" already, so how does that hurt her?
Yup, Palin has been called many things and she remains extremely popular, probably the most popular Republican right now.
I'm not so sure this is a political move....as much as it is a personal one. As much as I wish I knew "why" she stepped down..... Palin is due her privacy... and she's not obligated to give the media a darn thing. They only want to pick the bones of any surviving relative left in her bloodline.
I wish that were true, but while some have tried to have a rational discussion, too many have behaved like DUers and liberals, shouting down any discussion point that would suggest less than god-hood status for Palin.
It is all quite simple. Sarah Palin has a two part strategy. First is to extricate herself from being
Governor of Alaska and for the next 19 days to keep her nose clean so as to not invoke more ethics complaints, one last kick at the can by the anklebiters.
Now once she leaves office shortly after kicks in part 2 of the strategy which is to outline in general terms what she intends to accomplish in the lower 48, besides writing a book.
Folks, stay patient. More goodies are just over the horizon.
