Not "many," all.

FoxNews has discovered a niche audience, half of the American people, to paraphrase Dr. Krauthammer.

I am not putting too much faith in this poll, since a lot of people who considered themselves libertarian vote for 0. There is a good deal of debate on FR what a conservative is. My definiton of conservative is more of the conservatarian neofederalist type, while a good deal of people here are big govt social conservatives.

The problem with reading very much into a poll like this is that Colin Powell would argue that he is a conservative while I would argue that Obama received exactly zero votes from true conservatives.

Note how young people were the most liberal. I wonder how they will feel about Hope & Change with no job and student loans for their Women’s Studies or Journalism degrees.

My bet is Obama will cancel their student loans.

A lot of young people changed their tune after Carter when there were no jobs after college.

He wouldn't get too far with that argument, since he endorsed and voted for King O and his socialist policies.

I am a Libertarian. I live my life as a social conservative but I don’t demand my government force others to. Social conservatives love big government

Strange, to say the least, that self-described advocates for smaller government, lower taxes, and more freedom would vote for a big gov't, high taxes, fascist candidate.

You make my point.

But unfortunately Powell, and those like him, would reply to a Gallup poll by calling themselves conservative. So I'm betting that many in the 40% in the poll who call themselves conservatives wouldn't vote for a Republican if their life depended on it. If this poll were really true the Republicans would never lose an election. Bottom line: As much as I would like to believe it I think it's really a meaningless poll.

I didn't vote for “O.” Nor did I vote Mccain. I wrote Ron Paul's name in. Anybody who voted for TARP did not get my vote. Would I vote for Gov. Palin? Maybe, but I would need to hear her more on issues like illegal immigration

Keep in mind that Gallup understates conservative strength by polling ADULTS, not registered or likely voters. You get a more lefty sample this way.

The only problem with this is that many Dems call themselves “conservative.” I have a neighbor who is the epitome of a leftwing fruitcake and he truly believes he’s a conservative.

Cool. Now maybe the GOP will become the Conservative party again.

“Social conservatives love big government”

A ridiculous statement on it’s face. I am a social conservative and do NOT want government to police my beliefs.

Then you’re the exception. I see many of these social conservatives who come out and say government should ban abortion.

I take the “Limbaugh” philosophy on abortion. We don’t need more laws. We need to change the hearts and minds of people

Not the ones that understand God’s natural law.

Consequences punish those who are immoral.
There is no need for the law to do so.

The law is there to punish those who harm others.

Unfortunately, the left believes that the gov’t’s role is to alleviate the consequences for immoral behavior, leading, obviously (to us), more of that behavior.
