The US has been Brazils principal trading partner for nearly 80 years, but a sudden surge in Chinese demand for Brazilian iron ore in the first quarter of this year dislodged the Americans.
The news is the latest sign of Chinas increasing challenge to US hegemony in Latin America. China has been steadily increasing its sphere of influence and has become particularly close to the four Red South American countries: Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru.

What did they do, open Dollar General chains and put a Walmart in every town?
I wonder if this means an increase of Latin American immigrants to Brazil and less to the U.S. Will Mexicans start going there instead??
Brazil is the country of the future and always will be
The only good things to come out of Brazil.
No it means China has more secure access to basic commodities and gets to avoid the dollar. China is taking a long term view and positioning for the dollars collapse and at this point it might be closer than most think.

Are you assuming China's not paying in dollars, or do you know this?
Lula: Let's trade in our own currencies
China and Brazil: Dump the Dollar
But there's also been a bit of backpedaling, or soft-soaping, however you want to put it:
Brazil, China Plan to Trade Without Dollars Is Pure Idle Talk
China, Brazil Yuan Trade Will Take Years, Bank of China Says
Guess they got scared of setting off a dollar-dumping frenzy too early...
China has a growing appetite for resources as they industrialize. It's as direct and simple as that. And that appetite will result in China surpassing the US in certain areas around the globe. But to then take legitimate need for resources, and then spin it in such a way as to portray it as China's attempt to "challenge US hegemony", would be seen as an insult to the average Chinese.
So, I'm not a troll, rather, I believe it is important to share my perspective on what is not seen by many on this board but it blatantly clear to the Chinese.
Answer the question: Are you
a) An American-born person of chinese origin?
b) A Chinese-born naturalized American?
c) A Chinese passport holder?
d) A Chinese-born person holding some other passport?
e) None of the above
Your answer, if honest, will expose or redeem you. But until then to me and many others on FR, you are a Chicom Troll, even if an old benign one.
The reason why I am so upfront about what I say is because I know the FR is full of people who are offended by political correctness in this country. And yet, they themselves propagate those same political correctness. They simply do it from a 180 degrees perspective.
So, why should an American WAIVE the British flag when the Queen of England visits and still be viewed as law biding patriotic Americans and yet people of other non-European nationalties, if they were to do the same (waive a flag of their national origins), be viewed as unAmerican?
Yet, the British flag waiver will complain that THEY are the ones bound by political correctness when that isn't even remotely true at all. THEY are the ones promoting their own political correctness. And if anyone of color looked cross eyed at them for promoting European culture, they would complain that they are bound by political correctness. But that in'st even remotely true.
By the same token, there are many Americans that value our diplomatic relationships with Britain, Australia, Germany, Italy, Spain, and yes, even France (despite comments like American fries) and not have their patriotism questioned. I demand that same right. As an American, I value our relationship with China and hope for the best. I want the same things you want, world peace in which the US is an integral part of. I just don't believe America's future is solely based with a partnership with Europe. And I resent any view that anything outside of that perspective is unpatriotic, unAmerican, etc. I've even been called the fifth column on this website. For what? Because I value America's growing relationship with China? And how far back in history do we go? Did you know that Britain marched on American soil and burned the capital to the ground? Yet we have close relations with them and we have forgotten about the past. Can we not do the same with China? And can I not promote that without being seen as a Chimcom?.
So, may I ask you something? You said you live and work in China. How can you get to know the Chinese people and not know that many of these perspectives, like this original thread, be so audacious to the Chinese people. To hear how some Americans are so offended, because of silly reasons like Brazil doing more trade with China would just make their eyes roll.
If you see America's relationship with the world from a EURO-CENTRIC perspectve, then yes, I can understand why you would call me a Chicom Troll (take a number). I said "understand", I didn't say I am one. But if you see America's relationship from a Global-Centered perspective, then there's no reason you should call me a Chicom.
