Snowed: just a third of Americans accept climate change
SFGate.com ^ | 4/18/09 | Cameron Scott

Posted on 04/18/2009 2:56:10 PM PDT by NormsRevenge

A new Rasmussen poll reveals that just 34 percent of Americans believe that warming trends are caused by human activity, while nearly half believe they are simply planetary fluctuations. This is the most successful disinformation campaign in the history of the world (it's largely financed by fossil fuel companies).

There is virtual scientific unanimity on the issue: Natural planetary trends alone cannot account for the rapid changes we are currently witnessing. (CNN: 97 percent of climate scientists believe human activity is a key factor in rising temperatures.)

What's particularly amazing about these results are that those who don't accept human-caused climate change aren't refusing to accept the complexity of climate science: Climate is a complex system, so any predictions about it are in terms of likelihoods, not straightforward facts. But accepting that the planet's climate changes naturally also involves accepting that complexity. It just doesn't look at the specifics of those trends, and balks at assuming any responsibility for our own reality.

I suppose this is what happens when you politicize science—evolution, sex education. Acceptance of human causality among Democrats and unaffiliated voters is about the same, hovering at about half. But 66 percent of self-identifying Republicans disagree. And in worldwide polls, the question of human causality isn't even asked.

Bio - Cameron Scott is a claustrophobic nature-lover who self-interestedly hopes the planet and the species will survive the mistakes of the industrial age. Moved by Bill McKibben’s view that fossil fuels were a one-time bonanza — great party, helluva hangover — Cameron sees the next decade as an exciting, if terrifying, opportunity to fundamentally change how society works. As the community manager for SFGreen, he invites people green, blue and red to inspire, inquire, inform and kvetch about the ongoing green revolution.

A former fellow and web editor at Mother Jones and communications manager at Rainforest Action Network, Cameron is a freelance writer whose work has appeared in the S.F. Chronicle, the Texas Observer, AlterNet and Mother Jones. As a native of upstate New York, Cameron wishes there were more lakes closer to San Francisco, but he is thrilled to be in a city where it’s both easy and interesting to live green. (He has also come to appreciate windy beaches.) He lives in the Mission with his dog, Xochi.

Sure. If you get to decide who is and isn't a climate scientist.

The climate changes with or without us. That’s what it does.

The falling number of believers is the reason the push to impose global carbon regulations has grown so desperate. Once imposed they’re near impossible to get rid of.

It is amazing, the global scare-mongers have 10,000 times the budget and ALL the media on their side, and brainwashing kids starting in kindergarten with global warming propaganda, and it STILL hasn’t worked!!!!

This paragraph leads me to believe that they weren't listing all the hobbies Cameron has. Mush like this is likely to be chemically induced. :)

I agree. He seems like one to have a fully-”green” SFO lifestyle including pot, peyote, and LSD.

They’ve become another purely political agency. It’s the same as declaring tea to be a dangerous pollutant in an attempt to prevent people from dumping it in rivers.

Katie Couric once did a story about global warming. And she editorialized her fears that global warming was coming to be seen as just another liberal cause of the day. And she feared if that happened, that people wouldn’t take it seriously and take what she thinks of as appropriate action.

If it was not for the Sun Spots disappearing....the MSM would have had a Double Propaganda Hit...Obama and Global Warming.

40 inches of Snow in Denver area today....helps convert 10% of the last 33% that still Believe Al Gore is a Scientist.

Test for the Obama Science Advisor... Get up at 5 AM in the morning......Go outside and stay till 9 AM.

DID IT WARM UP since 5 AM ?
Ask yourself WHY it warmed up....Talk to a 5th Grader if you don’t know WHY it got warmer. Works better on Sunny days.

I suppose this is what happens when you politicize science

Yeah, you get a totally fraudulent scare campaign designed to concentrate even more control in the hands of the state while impoverishing the middle class. Green communism.

Big money is at stake for the GW crowd, huge amounts of money. They are desperate to get their tax/punish system in place before they lose what’s left of any credibility they might have left. I have a large family and many many friends of all political persuasions and not one believes in this GW scam, not one.
