During the 1976 Presidential campaign, Democratic candidate Jimmy Carter frequently referenced something called the "Misery Index" to suggest the Republican incumbent ought not be re-elected due to the index's high level, which was about 13.57% at that time. Carter won the 1976 election, and the Misery Index reached an all-time high of 21.98% under his administration.
Just what is a "misery index," and what type of misery index are we facing under an Obama administration?

Too many voters have no idea what the Carter years were like.
Sadly, I think they will find out first hand what a misery index is.
And, malaise...
Blast from the past.............
I remember Jimmy and his misery index. He said that a president who was in office with such a misery index had no business even running for election. President Ford was filling out the unexpired term of Nixon, and running for election in his own right in 1976.
Then, in 1980, Jimmy had nothing to say about the misery index when by his own criteria, he himself should not have even been running for re-election.
That’s how stupid politics can be. Democrats usually are the culprits, who invent half-baked criteria like a misery index as a form of passing judgement. Then, when they themselves are judged using those criteria, they have some excuse why it shouldn’t apply to them.
The people took care of Jimmy that year though.
Good post!
I was just thinking about those years.
Think about all of the college kids/young people who voted for Obama.
They might be in for a very rude awakening.
I remember that during the Carter years, young college grads not only couldn’t get work befitting a college grad, they were having a hard time finding a job as a hamburger flipper.
Good times...lol
“I remember that during the Carter years, young college grads not only couldnt get work befitting a college grad, they were having a hard time finding a job as a hamburger flipper.”
I remember that in an elementary class straw poll, Reagan beat Carter something along the lines of 22 to 2.
We were right beside a military base, but still...
I remember those years. I was in college and things looked very bleak until we elected Ronald Reagan.
BTW I heard that awful Non Reagan today on the radio for prostate pills.
Don't overlook the fact that you're from Texas.
Y'all have a tendency to vote "right", and beget smart young 'uns. ;o)
Reagan surely was a shot in the arm for this country!
He was just what we needed, and was there at the right time.
To tell you the truth, had he beaten Ford for the nomination in ‘76, I don’t know that he could have won the Presidency because of Watergate.
Prostate pills?
ROTFLOL!
So...he’s come to this...;o)
“Don’t overlook the fact that you’re from Texas.

True, but the dems had a stranglehold on Texas until Reagan. Heck, we really didn’t start taking all the state offices until GWB became governor in the 90s.
This is an order of magnitude worse than anything the worst president in american history dreamed up.
The ‘Rats had a stranglehold on the entire South at the time.
However, it was Reagan who started the sea change that we saw.
We were all smart. ;o)
I think we’ll be fortunate if we’re *only* as miserable under Zero as we were under Carter...
