Both MSNBC and the New York Times have reported rumors that the reason that Joe Biden hasn't resigned from the Senate yet is that he's hoping to pave the way for his son, Beau Biden (their names rhyme. It's adorable. Cute as buttons, that Biden family.) to take his seat.
The rumors are confusing as hell, but here's what I got out of them: If Biden resigns today, the current governor of Delaware, Ruth Ann Minner, would choose his successor. It would all work out spendidly: Resign. Appoint. Inaugurate. The "wash, rinse, repeat" of the political world.
But here's the thing: Senator Biden seems to be sitting around all day, doing all sorts of things that would be classified as "not resigning," thus leading people to speculate that he doesn't want Ruth Ann Minner to choose his successor (she has two first names, neither of which rhyme with "Joe," and that just doesn't cut it in the Biden family).

Who is Joe Biden?
Inventor of the opti-grab? No that would be "Who is Navin Johnson?"
Delaware? I thought Plugs was the Senator from MBNA.
That’s nuts!
What qualifications does his kid have?? Aren’t there congressmen, retired governors, state Senators and Delagates who would be more qualified and who would probably scream bloody murder at a line jumper??
It would look absolutely ridiculous to appoint his kid. It would look soooo bad. Make him come back and get a job.
Good one! Whatever did happen to ol' Palooka Joe? With the highly credentialed Hillary at state, Mr. Biden's vaunted foreign policy credentials will just be going to waste...
It worries me that our politics is resembling more and more the politics of the third-world, what with family dynasties and cults of personalities springing up around our mere mortal politicians
Maybe he’s waiting to see how the birth certificate lawsuits come out. He may not want to give up his Senate seat quite yet.
The writer is saying that the new governor, as his first act of business, would be to appoint a Senator who doesn't want the job, and just wants to be a bench-warmer? Is that what they expect of their governors in Delaware?
And what if it is true? What would that say about the representation that Delaware can expect in the Senate for the next two years? What if the appointed Senator decides that he likes the job after all? All of this is supposed to make it easier for Beau Biden to run in 2010?
I'd think that appointing his son to the Senate now would override his tour in Iraq. Is Biden afraid of the Rangel charge that the elites are protecting their children from serving in wars? If the current governor were to appoint Beau Biden if he wants to go to Iraq, why would she appoint somebody who says he doesn't want to serve? And if he still was appointed, there is nothing complelling him to accept the appointment at all. He could still say he'd rather do his tour in Iraq and then run when he returns.
Lunacy.

Well at least Biden’s son is waiting awhile, unlike Duncan Hunter’s son who just slid right into the seat. That is a little sick too.
They are appointing biden’s chief of staff for the next 2 years
Except that Biden has resigned and Ted Kauffman has been appointed his replacement.
That’s the North Korean way...
I’m a little less bothered by Hunter. He ran for the seat outright.
I also think there is a diferrence between jumping from military service to a congressional seat and between jumping from military service and a seat in the US Senate.
I don’t know what is more pathetic: the elitist nature of the Biden family or the fact that the GOP in the First State probably couldn’t muster a candidate capable of defeating Senator Blowhard’s kid?
Maybe 2 years of Obama-Biden may play against “Beau”?
How old is Beau? Could he possibly be named after these guys?
