I hope the public health officials hurl thunderbolts at the management of these hotels. This is unforgiveable.

I doubt too many people would be comfortable with washing and using a toothbrush that has fallen into their own toilet, leave alone a public one.

It would be easier to just pack all toiletries in a small sturdy box (Tupperware?), in your luggage, take it out whenever you need to use it, and pack it back into your luggage every time you leave the room unattended.

Everywhere you go in public, one should think, I didn’t clean this. I need to do it.

I worked at a Hilton during college. Our glasses were collected and sanitized. You picked up 80 glasses at the beginning of your shift and brought 80 back from the rooms.

At another hotel, there was a special solution to wash the glasses in the sink. If you didn’t wear gloves, your skin pealed from it. Trust me, they were clean.

We also carried a small bucket with a johnny mop and some industrial cleaner for the toilets. Let me tell you, if the shower or sink looked grungy, I cleaned them with THAT cleaner, rinsed and redid them with the regular stuff that made it shine. Our rooms were clean.

But think, any where you go, from McDonalds to the Red Roof, people you don’t know are preparing and cleaning for you. If you don’t trust that people are doing right by you, make your food at home and wash all things in HOT water before using them.

You are in charge of your health.

Exactly. And if in doubt, flip everything back and look at the sheets. If you see anything suspicious, call the management and have not only the sheets but the bedpad changed.

Or find another hotel.

The management does not clean the rooms. They trust that those they hire do a good job. If that is not true, the management need to know it.

Most places are clean. But we do take a chance no matter where we stay and eat.

I do have to ask though, how often were the bedspreads laundered?

Having watched CSI (that makes me an expert, ya know) I know that the bedspreads have over 100 separate DNA samples on them!

My first job when we get to hotels is to remove the bedspread.

I take tissues, grab the bedspread with the tissue, toss it outside the room and call room service to take it away. I also use anti-bac wipes on the remote, that's especially important in places that have adult pay-per-view..
Last time, my wife checked us in, walked to the room as I was getting the bags and flopped down on the bed with the kids before I could get to it. I made the children change their clothes and I wiped them down. My wife thinks I'm crazy but I was in a place in Indiana that had crust on the bed spread and replaced it with one that had wet spots and the glasses had lipstick, the coffee maker and fridge smelled like urine and there were opened rubber wrappers in the drawers. I left and drove around until I found a place that looked clean.
