Too Much Time On Homeschool Mom’s Hands
Lone Star Times ^

New age philosophy! False gods! Violence on the walls! Slaves in the cotton fields! Scandalous, I tell you.

“When she showed it to me, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh,’ ” said Hansell, who added that the mural presents a new age idea of peace and unity that could be confusing to Christian students. Hansell said she’d also like a more positive image of African Americans. “It doesn’t even represent even a fingernail of the faith here in Bastrop County and what (residents) believe.”

Among the images on the mural are an Aztec sun, ancient Egypt’s King Tutankhamen, Buddha and Shiva, a Hindu deity, dancing on a demon of ignorance.

Oh, my gosh! It will corrupt the students! We know that peace and unity are confusing to all Christians!

What, you might ask, in the heck am I talking about? A mural. A mural that is on the wall of Bastrop High School. A mural that has been on the wall of Bastrop High School since 2003. A mural that has been on the wall of Bastrop High School since 2003 with nary a peep from anyone that it might be harmful to their eyes or morals. And then….along comes Lauren Hansell.

To point out the sins of this mural. And to insist that it be removed. And you know what the funniest thing about this is?

Bastrop resident Lauren Hansell, who made the original complaint, homeschools her children but visits the school on Fridays to pray with students at the flagpole.

Good grief. Get a life.

BENZION ADDS–Here is the mural that, apparently, contains the power to destroy the faith of those who follow Jesus.

I am Art; FEAR ME!

You, on your way to the flagpole–feel your faith decline!
Bow down to the images of these Pagan Gods!

Just for the record, the title was not mine, I don't see this as at all a bash of homeschoolers but instead, just people who knee jerk about everything.

As high school murals go, this one doesn’t look all that bad.... at least in the pictures.

Yeah, it’s no big deal, it’s just art. She’s overreacting. But, it is telling that they could find room for Buddha and Shiva, and not for Jesus or another Judeo-Christian figure. The school system probably mandated it that way.

This can be on the wall but a kid can’t wear a cross or carry a Bible? Let’s at least be consistent.

It may, the mural is very large and has a lot more than these images are showing. I am looking for a better image that shows more if it.

As I'm reading around, it appears this is consistent. The mom who was complaining was at the school because she leads ‘flagpole prayers’. On the message boards at the Austin American Statesmen, people are saying there is at least two Christian symbols on the mural.

I homeschool and I completely disagree with her. I am also a Christian and use a Christian History Curriculum that actually teaches children the history of the world including the different religions.
Let’s give our children credit for being able to tell right from wrong. Isn’t that the whole reason we homeschool.
Besides, as the article states, the students in the school don’t even notice it because they don’t know what those images are.
As a side note: World history is not on the homeschool application for our district. The government does not want history taught or the kids would understand that socialism is bad news for them. This mural could be compared to writing Cuneiform on the wall and expecting them to understand or be influenced by it. Maybe they should assign a project to write a paper about someone featured in the mural....hmmmmm.

May I ask, what is a home school application in your district? Do you actually have to apply to the authorities for permission to home school?

Yes, every year we must fill out a form listing our anticipated curriculum and take a test or submit a letter from a certified teacher stating our children have improved.

If you submit to those requirements, I am not criticizing you. I would say, however, that I probably would not.

We began home schooling in Florida in 1982. We ran in to officialdom’s scorn, but refused to submit to testing or submitting anything, as I am of the absolute conviction that a state and county that makes an utter mess of young people should not be allowed the idea that it can tell me what is best for my children. That is the stand we take, and went through the wringer for it, but stood, and they eventually came to the place of having to decide whether to send the sheriff or find their own reasons for leaving us alone. They decided on the latter.

Our stand more or less then set the precedent in that county, at least for the next seven years that we resided in Florida.
