Apple offers customers a $29 iPhone rental in the meantime, though one customer speaking directly with AppleInsider observed that he successfully negotiated a waiver of the fee during his repair process."

The link here indicates a more systemic problem:
Windsor explained that the screen of the iPhone uses a chemical deposition to provide touch sensitivity based on heat. The international property rights for this technology, he said, were purchased from a bankrupt Finnish company that was trying to make a similar device. But that company encountered the problem that with extensive use, the film would begin to degrade and the screen would lose its sensitivity. Windsor said the problem typically manifested itself within three to six months. While Apple should have been aware and fixed the problem, the broker said, only time will confirm that all is well with that touch screen. (link)

Interesting if true - I’m somewhat skeptical since I believe one of the “big boys” ( Sharp? ) was the original provider of the screens. It would not make sense for Apple to develop or purchase it’s own untested technology when it could pretty much buy everything off the shelf.
But who knows ? The iphone discussion boards bring out new problems every few days it seems.
I finally played with an iPhone for an hour today at the Apple store in NYC. They have abut 50 phones activated at tables for you to play with. I figure this phone has been out since it launched and gets played with every day non stop.
When the 3G version comes out I will buy it that day. It is an incredibly cool and intuitively easy phone. I figured out how to use each feature instantly. The screen is absolutely gorgeous, the camera is pretty damn good. Flipping around pictures is amazing. Google maps is incredible, using your fingers to pinch in and out to zoom in or out or move. I did not notice any problems with the screen. My only complaint is typing on the touchscreen is a bit hit or miss. The ‘buttons’ are pretty small and its easy yo make mistakes. However the intuitive text correction is also pretty good. I even browsed FR today!

You have about 5 years to wait - I believe that’s how long the agreement with AT&T lasts.
IF a european version comes out with 3G it will be locked to one supplier also.
Obviously, apple would not put out demonstration units with the less then first rate touchscreens.
why 5 years? The only thing that kept them from incorporating a 3G radio was a power/draw/size trade off. I cant beleieve they wont have that fiexed shortly.
With competitions from other phones that have 3G, and 3G coverage expanding, getting a 3G iPhone launched is the #1 upgrade for iPhone 2.0.

Now it comes down to a few factors -
How soon they can get the chips, assuming that the “big boys” will have first crack at them from the manufacturers.
How soon they think they can get away with telling all the folks that bought the 1st ones that now they really, really need the newer version.
If AT&T will let people out of their original two year contract to buy the new one.
Not going to wait for GPS ?
oh ATT will sell you a brande new iPhone all right. They will just give you a brand new 2 yr contract. no refund for the old phone
