It's not unusual for Dee McKinsey to have three cans of Coke before she leaves the house each morning for her job as the regional director of boards and volunteerism at the American Cancer Society in Chicago.
"There is nothing better than the feel of Coke on the back of your throat in the morning," said McKinsey, a morning pop drinker since the 1970s, savoring the cold, stinging sensation that coffee drinkers just don't get.
But these days, more people are enjoying that chilled morning jolt as they increasingly turn to soft drinks instead of coffee, flaunting mom's no-pop-for-breakfast rule many had in their youth.
Consumption of soft drinks at breakfast eaten outside the home has nearly doubled in the past 15 years, while coffee consumption with breakfast outside the home has fallen nearly 25 percent, according to data compiled by New-York based consumer research firm NPD Group, which has offices in Rosemont.

I'm guessing this trend is more related to hangovers than anything else.
Coke - It's not just for breakfast anymore.
I drink soda in the morning. Diet Dr. Pepper usually. Sometimes Diet Mt. Dew. Other than this last week or so, it is usually just too dang hot here to drink hot coffee, and I refuse to pay $6 for a Starbucks frozen coffee.
Great, so when all these idiots get diabetes in their 40's, the rest of us are stuck with their medical bills.
It's related to not liking coffee. Everybody likes a morning caffiene hit, but if you don't like coffee or tea that's gotta come from soda.
Just for reference, that's 30 teaspoons of sugar, but, whatever floats your boat. I guess I'll stick with coffee.
Well, considering that if I were to drink coffee every day, I would put sugar and creamer in it, but if I drink soda it's diet, I'd guess that your worry of paying for my diabetes would be more accurate if I stuck with the coffee.
Diabetes and osteoporosis! The carbonated water seems to leech out the calcium they so desperately need in their teens and twenties for old age health!.......
My college roommate liked Coke -- flat and strong. He took to buying Coke syrup and mixing it half and half with water. Gah!
gross
That's what I was thinking. Even if you go "diet" and avoid the sugar, you still have to deal with the effects of carbonated water and osteoporosis.
I pretty much stopped drinking cokes and only have about 1 or 2 a month. Too much sugar.
"more related to hangovers"
Bingo...! Coffee is rough after night of drinking...
I refuse to pay $6 for a Starbucks frozen coffee
Coke in the morning is so good, I give it up for Lent
There's gonna be a lot of DEAF HUMP-BACKED people in the middle of this century!..........
Gives your nose a rest......
