Sony Playstation (PS3) sells for $3600.00 on eBay

As my grandmother used to say: "It's not the whole world gone mad... just the people in it."

When bidding ended it sold for $3,600.

Not that it's really my business that someone is willing to pay thirty-six hundred dollars for a PlayStation 3. But this really does seem to be materialism at its worst to me. The Xbox 360 has been out for a year but it'll probably still be another year before we get one: by then it'll be a lot more inexpensive, many more games will have been published for it, and at that point most if not all of the bugs will have been ironed out. To buy a high-end game system - or any other sophisticated piece of electronics - at launch is to welcome all the technical glitches that are probably still in the product.

There's more important things in life than waiting in line for a week at the local Best Buy for a game console... that may not even be in stock anymore by the time you get to the counter. And someone doesn't need to have the latest bleeding-edge toys to have fun.

(Now, I probably wouldn't mind a crack at a Nintendo Wii: much lower-priced, and its controller is really one of the most innovative things I've seen come from the video-game industry in quite a while... but I can still hold off on getting one.)

The bidding looks phoney. Probably a couple of Sony people bidding it up for cheap publicity. Neither of the bidders had any history.

Its been my experience that the inexperienced newbie eBay bidders are the ones who are most likely to go bid crazy and pay outrageous amounts for the items they are trying to win.

The winning bidder will have bidders remorse this morning.

For $3600 you can get a very fast PC and all the games you could reasonably want.

Did the seller collect payment yet? If not, it may not have really sold.

But wait to see if the payment actually is made.

Lots of the high priced bids go unpaid. I would not be surprised if that will be the case here.

John Edwards _ a vocal critic of the retailer _ asked his local Wal- Mart store for help in getting the potential 2008 presidential candidate a Sony PlayStation 3. Edwards said a volunteer did so by mistake.

Edwards told The Associated Press that the volunteer "feels terrible" about seeking the game unit at Wal-Mart a day after his boss criticized the company, saying it doesn't treat its employees fairly.

"My wife, Elizabeth, wanted to get a Playstation3 for my young children. She mentioned it in front of one of my staff people," Edwards said. "That staff person mentioned it in front of a volunteer who said he would make an effort to get one. He was making an effort to go get one for himself.

"Elizabeth and I knew nothing about this. He feels terrible about this. He made a mistake, and he knows he should not have used my name," Edwards said.

Edwards said the volunteer was "a young kid" unaware of what he called flawed Wal-Mart policies. He called the Wal-Mart statement an effort to divert attention from its own problems.

After Wal-Mart this summer hired Edelman executive Leslie Dach as its public relations director and put him on the company's executive team, analysts said the retailer would likely become more aggressive toward its critics.

Wal-Mart had noted in a news release Thursday that on the same day Edwards was criticizing the company in a conference call with union- backed activists, the volunteer staff member had asked a Raleigh, N.C., electronics department manager to obtain a PS3 for the ex- senator's family.

From Wal-Mart headquarters in Bentonville, Ark., company spokesman David Tovar said the person who called left a voicemail at the Raleigh store and identified himself as an Edwards staff member. When the manager returned the call, the staff member again identified himself as working for Edwards, and Wal-Mart said it confirmed that with Edwards' office.

The retailer's news release accused Edwards of not wanting to wait his turn.

"While the rest of America's working families are waiting patiently in line, Senator Edwards wants to cut to the front," the Wal-Mart statement said.

The PlayStation 3 console is set to go on sale Friday.

Edwards, the Democrats' vice presidential candidate in 2004, spoke Wednesday to supporters of union-backed WakeUpWalMart.com on a conference call launching the group's holiday season campaign to pressure Wal-Mart for better labor standards.

And may very well not even go through with the purchase. Although, I still think it would be a cheap way for Sony to hype it up. The two people who bid it up have only been members since October and only have one purchase between them. It just does not appear legit to me.

He could be a rich guy (who else can afford to pay 3600 bucks for a 600 dollar game system?) who doesnt want his identity known, so he he uses a secondary eBay name.

In either case, todays cutting edge gaming system is tomorrows junk. :-)

Q: bigrew- I already bid on one of these systems but now since it was at EB not guaranteed to get it I paid within minutes of auction ending! I see that u live in Henderson and so do I since I have to be on a plane by 5:00 Sat. if I win bid can we meet somewhere for pick up? Nov-15-06

A: I was 2nd in line at the Game Stop on tropicana. I have paid for everything except the 2nd controller as they couldn't give me a price since they didn't have a sku for it yet. The game Rainbox Six Las Vegas has been delayed I understand. If you want we could meet at the game stop when I pick it up and you could take it then and there or we could meet later in Henderson. I will get your number and when the game comes in we can meet up so you can get it also. If that works for you Good Luck bidding. My number is XXX-XXXX

The thing is, how many will pay?

It looks tempting to run out and get one to sell, but how many actually will pay?

Something seems fishy about this guy buying all those playstations! So far, I've seen that he's bought AT LEAST 3 of them for $15,099, and another for OVER $10,000, not to mention numerous others!

I don't think he's done yet! Everytime I look, he's buying more.

Are people that stupid that they'd pay that kind of money for a DUMB game!?

There are people out there that voted for Nancy Pelosi, Ted Kennedy, John Murtha, etc.

So, yes.
