Stanford University's Folding@Home Stats page ^ | 08/02/2006 | Texas Booster

Time for a new FreeRepublic folding@home thread.

Our FreeRepublic team of 358 members comprised primarily of Free Republic members in good standing have banded together to donate their excess CPU cycles to a worthy cause. Via distributed computing, millions of computers around the world, contribute directly to scientific research, in the quest for a greater understanding of diseases such as Alzheimer's, Cancer, and Mad Cow (BSE).

Currently, the team is in 75th place (with 1009 active CPUs - 55,700 completed Work Units and 9.75 million points).

This is an entirely voluntary program, and if you want to learn more, please see the links posted below (or read one of the previous 20 folding threads)

Reb,

Thanks for all your help. I'm now up and running the console version on two systems, happily crunching for Free Republic!

Thank you very much for joining us. It is fun being part of a team, doing good research and rubbing DUmmies' noses a bit.

To one and all - Team is 36120!

Does anyone recognize the new folder "ThE_RiPpEr" that has joined our team?

Please ping me or FReepmail me to be added to the ping list.

I don't recognize the name, but I am glad for the points. Thanks for folding with us.

Welcome to the team!

Help spread the word. I'm sure there are many other FR members who don't know about our folding team

"I'm now up and running the console version on two systems, happily crunching for Free Republic!"

YEAAAA!

Thanks for using Egon's monitor - now, at last, I'm not the last one on his list (he sorts alphabetically), lol.

I just checked your stats on his monitor page - you started out with some hefty WUs, one worth 396 points and the other worth 385.  Those will take a while to finish, so don't worry about not showing up on the team stats page.  That won't happen until a WU finishes and sends back the results and then when the page gets updated a few hours later.

I noticed that one of your systems is a laptop.   For good tips on laptop issues such as shutting down due to overheating, check back through some of the FAH threads (they are all linked at the top of each new thread).  From your browser's 'Edit' menu, you can select 'Find on this page' and then search that page for the word 'laptop'.

Good Luck, and, once again, Welcome Aboard - Glad to have you with us.

Hello,

Just joined Free Republic, although I've been a long time lurker.

Never folded before. After reading what its all about it really hits home. My very close friend is dying from Huntingtons, a terrible disease. He was extremely intelligent and served in the Navy maintaining naval electronic systems. Now he is entering the final stage of Huntingtons. It is awful to see the effects this disease has had on both mind and body.

Personally for me, "folding for the Gipper" was the right thing to do.

Thank you very much for letting us know and joining our effort. Many people on this forum struggle with the effects of disease, either personally or through a family member or close friend.

Free Republic is not only about flame wars, the posting police and a ZOT or two.

From the way-back machine, check out this posting from papasmurf. It really set the tone for why we fold and pay a few bucks extra each month for power:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1548372/posts

We can all walk, talk and earn an income. Your friend and many others need assistance just to make it through each day, until the Lord calls them home. Folding is a very small way to contribute to the community of research and find a cure.

Even if FR started producing ZERO point tommorrow, DU, at their present atats, would take them 607 days to tie us.

So while their number... ie, 200 looks good, it's all relative.

I think an 18 month lead is good enough... we need to focus on the stratosphere... get up in to the top 30, top 25 range, and then just go for long term steady.....

Thing about anything above top 50... everyone into folding, knows that you're there. Hard to miss a team, when it's on page one, of evey broser brought up showing pat hands.

Thanks for all of your resources for Team Reagan.

Stanford keeps sending me 50,000 unit pigs. Can't I forward them to you?

Welcome aboard.

Glad to have you with us. There's usually a new thread every week and newcomers usually get placed on the ping list.

It's been a lot of fun. Especially needling the DUmmies. (They have their own folding team and thought they could overtake us in short order. HAHAHA - NEVER gonna happen, LOL.

Look for your stats on the team page and see if you can move up the ranks. Good Luck.

In the spirit of consistency and all that, I've modified the FAH Monitor slighly.

Now, clicking on the name of your machine will take you to the specific page for that machine (instead of clicking on the status indicator). I've moved the machine-link (which most of us aren't using anyway) to a new icon in the status column that looks like a notepad.

This brings it into line with the new project stats functionality, that allows us to click on a user or machine in the project history.

As always, suggestions for improvement are more than welcome!

Haven't seen any activity from you in awhile. I hope you're OK.

I've enjoyed us being neck and neck, you should be trailing closer waiting for some of my machines to go down while I'm outside the country.

Speaking of memory, I cannibalized my father's defunct Pentium 4 running at 1.8 GHz and replaced the motherboard and CPU with a cheap dual core Pentium D running at 2.66 MHz, loaded it with Novell's new SLED 10 SUSE enterprise desktop linux distribution, and set it to folding. But it was s-l-o-w. Finally I noticed at boot-up that the old DDR memory was running in single channel mode. I checked and discovered I had mismatched memory. I fixed that this morning with two matched DDR 400 512MB chips. It's folding like a champ now.

NOw I have to figure out how to set each core to folding separate from the other so that I effectively have two 2.66 MHz computers folding on one board.

I did this for SETI for a few years. I'll be folding very soon.

I made 20,000 points, do I get a cookie?
Not bad for one computer.

If I had a dual core CPU would it be twice as fast or more like 30%?

Run two console instances in different folders. Use different machine IDs.

I knew you were trying to catch me!
