There are so many bullheaded and stubborn people holding political office in the United States it's distressing. But in reality, being bullheaded is exactly the type of mindset one needs in order to succeed in such a business where competition is savage and one's reviews (elections) determine not whether one receives a raise, but rather whether one keeps his job.

Interesting. I have been thinking about this recently, and have decided that I am going to give up being strongly partisan. Why? Because of the idiocy I see, mostly on the Left, at the moment. Blinded by their rage, hatred, and according to this article "fear of being wrong". They have to invent conspiracies to ameliorate their egos. Moonbats, most of them.
I dont EVER want to be like that, so I shall remain a Skeptic, but not a cynic.
Its not just the left, either. Many on the right will succumb to this, especially for a couple of topics, which I will not name :) So its possible for anyone I suppose, but my hope would be that those on the right are more immune.

Partisanship is great for a republic, how else are you going to contrast your views?

Partisanship, when taken to extremes, leads to willful ignorance I'm afraid. Of course anything taken to extremes can be bad. I just don't ever want to be so partisan, that I ignore the facts or spin them conveniently away.

Some folks have described the phrase "compassionate Conservative" as an oxymoron. I thought the phrase unfortunate because I know that conservatism is, by nature compassionate.
Likewise I consider myself a proud partisan. I could coin a phrase like "rational partisan" to differentiate myself from the howling moonbat partisans of the left, but why bother.
Should the left successfully bastardize the term partisan the same way they have so many others, I guess I'll just add it to the list;
rockrr - a proud racist, homophobic, bigot who sees through the word-games of liberals ;'}

Agreed. My aunt is a "Bush can do no wrong" Conservative. And when she debates politics with my Dad, a Democrat, she comes across as an idiot.
However, my Dad and I have had some really good debates and yes, I gripe about Bush, too. Example: we both are not happy about the illegal immigrant situation.
