(Semi-vanity) Interesting flashback from 2001...foreign anti-American Left's attacks on Clinton
BBC world ^ | 17 March 2006 | NZerFromHK, and various others

Posted on 03/17/2006 2:10:42 AM PST by NZerFromHK

I was just looking at the web and came up with this archived "talking points" from the Beeb when Bubba left the White House in 2001. Many of you ahve heard that the Left outside the United States loves Clinton yada yada. This conflicts with what I saw in my own eyes from newspapers and news reports published in New Zealand when Bubba was in the White House. I remember they damned the fellow as yet-another-American-imperialist. I have here comments from the BBC talking points which reflect what I saw as resembling anti-American-and-Clinton comments from this country's Left during the Clinton years:

---------------------------------------------------------

He will go down as the man who made America vain and egocentric and not willing to deal with the outside world. He encouraged the US to use its financial muscle to dictate to the world how it should live and any difference of opinion is not to be tolerated. Wake up America and get a president with compassion not just passion.

Mark Lisle, Germany

---------------------------------------------------------

For merciless bombing campaigns to distract attention from him NOT 'having sexual relations with that woman'. For supporting Israel as they broke numerous UN Resolutions in order to gain the political support of the New York Jewish Vote. For his love for a fine Cuban Cigar!

Wayne Brannan, UK

---------------------------------------------------------

Clinton clearly has done a good job on the domestic front creating jobs and improving the already high American quality of life. However he still pursued the bully-boy foreign policy of the United States which did not help his popularity outside of the US. Inside the US I believe he will be remembered as the President who was there when petrol prices peaked.

Nicholas Bradley, UK

---------------------------------------------------------

Now this is Clinton-damning, from the Left. I wonder what these people think of him now? Perhaps they now think "Clinton was bad, but George W. Bushitler is infinitely worse!" eh?

As I understand it, Clinton got the Democrats elected by taking the party to the centre. According to Geoffrey Archer, Tony Blair did the same thing with Labour. No wonder the left are unhappy.

My favourite Bill Clinton quote:

"When I was in England, I experimented with marijuana a time or two, and I didn't like it. I didn't inhale, and never tried it again."
-- Bill Clinton, during his 1992 Presidential campaign

In the US political terminology, this is called triangulation.

I didn't watch the news. What's the count at the Games today?

New Zealand did very well in the triathlon (I don't know if that is the right spelling). They didn't win the gold but they did win silver and bronze in the womens' and took the silver in the mens'. No need to mention who won the gold. Before events started this morning Australia had won 12 gold and India was second with 4. However, I haven't spotted much of the maple syrup.

Despite having 8 times the population of New Zealand, Canada only manages to get the same number of gold medals so far. Once again, the Great White North is being eaten alive by other countries.

No wonder why a cursory glance at the threads by Canadian FRers reveal why they are in such a foul mood LOL.

I saw that and had a good laugh. It seems there are a few new FReepers making comments not designed to improve US/Australian relations. I have responded to several. I don't think Aussies, and the Aussie media in particular, would be too impressed. And I am not referring to the drug squad.

A lor of FR posters are just "talk before they think" types of people. I wouldn't take their jests seriously, and I don't think you should too. It's too bad because roughly speaking we are on the same boat of politics as them and their kneejerk remarks hurt our side of things.

Intelligent replies are in the minority, but you can spot them when they appear.

You are correct there. The impact at the grass roots level is very important as without grass roots support people such as John Howard do not survive. It even leads to situations were the hard left controls the balance of power through the Senate. In Australia that means the Greens. I am sure some of these comments have come from people who have no idea where Australia is or what its relations with the US are. In this part of the world being tactful with neighbouring countries is so important.

I found this report from the games very amusing:

Australian gymnasts win second gold medal
5:16 PM March 18

Australia continued its medal haul today when gymnasts Joshua Jefferis and Philippe Rizzo scored gold and bronze in the men's all-around final.

Canada's Nathan Gafuik thought he had secured the gold with a score of 88.35 but Jefferis' performance on his final apparatus was too strong, giving him an overall score of 89.45 and the gold medal.

Ping! foreign Anti-American Left damning Clinton when Bubba was in the White House - something which American liberals would now rather want you to forget.

I understand your view on Canada and it's all in good humor.

But, I've seen FR posters take the same tack with Canada, branding them all as a pile of leftist stinkos. When we do have good friends in Canada as we do with you.

This is a conservative board without international boundaries. But, there are some narrow, uninformed thinkers.

"Australians celebrate first ever gold in Commonwealth Games"

Yes this is a real headline and it relates to yesterday's events at the Commonwealth Games. Guess where from?
