I appologize in advance if this thread does not meet FR standards and gets pulled from this section.. I am hoping that this thread meets FR standards for the BLOGGER section of FR.
I don't know why the pop ups are showing up on the website.. I am working to get that resolved.. in the meantime if you link DIRECTLY the pop ups dont show up..

I'd jump all over this if I was in your area. My son is planning on studying flying at Embry Riddle starting in '07.
BTW, the pop-ups are always on angelfire sites. It is part of the user agreement.

The response to my "little" class has been GREAT for only having been "active" for a couple of days.
In case you did not check the class website. The first assignment is to send me an e-mail and tell me WHY you want to take this class, and include any previous flight training you have had...
I look forward to getting this thing "OFF THE GROUND" right away !!

Subject: Aviation rules
This appeared in the current issue of Australian Aviation Magazine (June 2000?)
1. Every takeoff is optional. Every landing is mandatory.
2. If you push the stick forward, the houses get bigger. If you pull the stick back, they get smaller. That is, unless you keep pulling the stick all the way back, then they get bigger again.
3. Flying isn't dangerous. Crashing is what's dangerous.
4. It's always better to be down here wishing you were up there than up there wishing you were down here.
5. The ONLY time you have too much fuel is when you're on fire.
6. The propeller is just a big fan in front of the plane used to keep the pilot cool. When it stops, you can actually watch the pilot start sweating.
7. When in doubt, hold on to your altitude. No one has ever collided with the sky.
8. A 'good' landing is one from which you can walk away.
9. A 'great' landing is one after which they can use the plane again.
10. Learn from the mistakes of others. You won't live long enough to make all of them yourself.
11. You know you've landed with the wheels up if it takes full power to taxi to the ramp.
12. The probability of survival is inversely proportional to the angle of arrival. Large angle of arrival, small probability of survival and vice versa.
13. Never let an aircraft take you somewhere your brain didn't get to five minutes earlier.
14. Stay out of clouds. The silver lining everyone keeps talking about might be another airplane going in the opposite direction. Reliable sources also report that mountains have been known to hide out in clouds.
15. Always try to keep the number of landings you make equal to the number of take offs you've made.
16. There are three simple rules for making a smooth landing. Unfortunately no one knows what they are. You start with a bag full of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the bag of experience before you empty the bag of luck.
17. Helicopters can't fly; they're just so ugly the earth repels them.
18. If all you can see out of the window is ground that's going round and round and all you can hear is commotion coming from the passenger compartment, things are not at all as they should be.
19. In the ongoing battle between objects made of aluminum going hundreds of miles per hour and the ground going zero miles per hour, the ground has yet to lose.
20. Good judgment comes from experience. Unfortunately, the experience usually comes from bad judgment.
21. It's always a good idea to keep the pointy end going forward as much as possible.
22. Keep looking around. There's always something you've missed.
23. Remember, gravity is not just a good idea. It's the law. And it's not subject to repeal.
24. The three most useless things to a pilot are the altitude above you, runway behind you, and a tenth of a second ago.

Greetings ! I am getting back a few replies to Assignment #1 and #2 - I really need this back ASAP.. CLARIFICATION for Assignment #2 .. Based on the responses I have recieved it is obvious that a few of you have some experience... The purposed of the Panel Assignment is for me to get an idea about where you are in the training.. please ONLY e-mail with information about the items you UNSURE of for example the "sqaure knob to the left of the throttle.. etc" If this is ALL new to you. I want you to take a guess on some of them so I can see how your logical reasoning..for example.. (the Alititude thing tells me how high above the ground I am) <-- WHICH IS INCORRECT BY THE WAY, but at least it lets me know you are thinking.. NOW for ASSIGNMENT #3 What CRITICAL instrument is MISSING from the PANEL PHOTO .. If you don't know it's okay.. Just send me an e-mail that you don't know... This question is geared towards some of the folks with a little experience.. I look forward to hearing back from you !! David C. Osborne

Ok... I will probably place the order around the FIRST of JANUARY to give everyone a chance to get the money to me.. ORDER must be prepaid so you will be counted in as soon as I get the money...I will pay for shipping,, but I always accept donations, which I will pass on to the church for use of the classroom... I want this to be a VOLUNTEER PROJECT...
I only got ONE CORRECT answer on the PITOT question which is okay...
I still have only recieved replies from less than HALF of the registered students.. It is very important that you try to spend at least 15mins a day on this class.. you will find out very quickly if this is really something you want to do....
Feel free to RESEARCH your answers in books or on the internet.. flying is always an OPEN BOOK exam !..
In the real world if you have a question and you have time, use ANY and ALL resources to get the BEST answer!
Sometimes in flying you DON'T have time to research the answer.. For Example if you are 100 FEET above the ground, and your airspeed is TOO SLOW..and the aircraft starts to decend rapidly (STALL) we call this TOO LOW and TOO SLOW.. you Don't have time to research the solution to this problem... you better LOWER the NOSE (to pick up airspeed), and INCREASE POWER to gain ALTITUDE (or at lease stop the rapid descent)
Other than that if you have time to answer a question.. do your best research and answer the question the best that you can..
I will use the panel photo for MANY of the assignments so if you can print it out that would be helpful !
ASSIGNMENT #4
Tell me what you know about the controls.. What happens when you turn the wheel to the left/right.. What happens when you pull in towards you or push it away from you....
Look forward to hearing back from you ALL !!
There is NO time limit for ANY of the assignments.. it is BEST to answer them as best as you can, the same day you get the assignment.. It will make the classroom time MUCH BETTER !!
If you plan to purchase a Gleim Private Pilot Kit please e-mail me ASAP put the word GLEIM ORDER in the subject line PLEASE ..

many of you had made great effort on this one......
The CRITICAL missing instrument from the panel , at least I don"t see it...is the COMPASS... the compass is independent of all instruments/systems .....
TELL ME WHY?
The flight instrument on the panel is a DIRECTIONAL GYRO.. it ONLY tells your ACTUAL direction when set to match the COMPASS.. Which you must CONSTANTLY check/re-check/adjust in flight.....
NOTICE THE ADJUSTMENT KNOB to the lower left of the instrument..
......WHY?
BONUS QUESTIONS.....
Many of you identified correctly the TRANSPONDER.. but no one told me why it was set at 1200... tell me what that number means...
also tell me what other TRANSPONDER CODES the pilot might set AUTOMATICLY without direction from AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL..

E-mail #12 to the GROUP (10 December 2005)
Greetings..
This is turning out to be an exciting adventure for me, I hope you are enjoying this ONLINE FLIGHT SCHOOL.. If you have any QUESTIONS please remember to put the word QUESTION in the subject line.. and only ONE QUESTION per e-mail.. however you may submit as many questions as you wish...
Attitude Indicator and Artificial horrizion ARE synonymous as is Turn Coordinator and turn and slip..
The PITOT HEAT switch is CORRECT.. A pitot MUST be heated when you fly in clouds to prevent the holes from icing over.. if your pitot tube freezes the AIRSPEED indicator will basicly turn into an ALITIMETER in other words as you climb the indicated speed will increase.. a pilot who fails to recognize this problem will INCORRECTLY pull back on the stick thinking the plane is in a NOSE DOWN (rapid speed increase).. and end up STALLING the aircraft and inadvertantly getting into a spin
CLASSROOM Training STARTS TODAY !!(WED 14 DEC 2005) 11:00am - 1:00pm at Thomasville Road Baptist Church...
http://www.thomasvilleroad.org/mapdirections.htm
SEE YOU THERE !!!
David
You must then obtain the AIRPORT ELEVATION (above sea level) and subtract that from your INDICATED ALTITUDE to obtain your EXACT ALTITUDE ABOVE THE GROUND.. which is really what you want to know when you are coming in for a landing right? especially if you are coming in LOW VISIBITLY and can't actually see the runway... we will get more into this when we talk about navigation etc.
How are ya'all comming along with the phonetic alphabet.

AFTER ACTION REPORT FROM CLASS #1 (14 December 2005)
I have 23 students signed up and actively participating in this class however only ONE student showed up for the classroom session today...
I really need to know if any more of you are planning to attend the ACTUAL CLASSROOM SESSIONS ..
I have recieved several REQUESTS for the materials but have only recieved payment for ONE COMPLETE KIT....
I will only be able to get the discounted price if I have an order for AT LEAST 4 KITS.... This being said, I have some decisions to make about how to move forward from here..
I am really enjoying this class and it is something I have wanted to do for a long time but was not able to work it out logistically....
Please pass the word on to ALL your fellow homeschoolers...
E-mail I recieved from one of my students .. I hope he does not mind my sharing it with the GROUP....
I would just like to thank you for continuing with the class today even though I was the only one that showed. I learned a lot in that 2 hours. If you decide to cancel the classroom time just tell me. Otherwise I will plan on being there next week. I think I will be able to fit it in next semester if you continue to do it. If not I will just continue with it online (like everybody else it seems). :)
