A Comparison of Character

With so much attention focused on New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, a significant fact has been largely overlooked. As a proud citizen of the Magnolia State I believe it’s high time to make a comparison of just how folks from Mississippi dealt with the storm’s aftermath compared to those in and around New Orleans.

One of my brothers was involved in the relief effort. A cross-country trucker like me, he spent 30 days hauling FEMA trailers loaded with ice and food into Southern Mississippi. We spoke on the phone at length just last night, and I discovered how deeply moved he was by the whole experience.

He told me of how people would walk or drive up to the back of his trailer and ask for only what they needed, rather than pushing and shoving and fighting, as happened in New Orleans. He spoke of how locals would pitch in and help rather than stand there demanding a handout. He spoke of the graciousness, patience and courtesy of Mississippians who were showing a strength of character that was scarcely evident among the riotous masses in Southern Louisiana.

I have too tell you what happened here in Gulfport, Ms, after Katrina. I was very proud too live here. Black people and White people helped each other out. Yes there were the rogue elements of white punks and black punks that did evil deeds. But at the end of the day, when it was all said and done, we all stood with each other. Things like this bring the worst and the best out in people. In my "hood", it brought out the best.

Hi Neighbor!

I live in Laurel. Parts of town were just smashed while others looked as though nothing had happened. I'm fortunate to live in a low area with good drainage, so my house was spared any damage.

There's still work to be done, but overall things are looking up in Jones County.

My biggest challenge was dealing with 3 VERY unhappy cats after they'd spent 9 days in a kennel. I thought they were gonna chew my legs off for awhile after I got'em back home.

That's "Bubbie" doing his Garfield impersonation...

Feel free to use it. If you've already copied it, I'd appreciate a tiny "alanburkhart.com" in the lower right corner. It might be good for a hit or two on my site. It ain't mandatory. Just a thought.

I can e-mail you one with it already on it if you'd rather.

As to Bubbie himself, he weighs in at 16 pounds. Dogs tremble at the mention of his name (well, sort of). Of all the pets I've ever had, he's my favorite.

[Bubbie for President!]

Note that while Bubbie does read his fan mail, it is impossible for him to respond to all of it.
:p
