Chris Matthews on Purple Hearts

Is anyone else watching Chris Matthews's embarassing attempt to exploit the mistake involving Purple Hearts given to soldiers from the Iraq War who didn't deserve them?

Matthews seems to have gone into the show thinking these brave soldiers--who were badly injured but NOT due to enemy action--were somehow screwed by the Pentagon or the Bush Administration, but particularly the second man are emphasizing that they understand why their awards were taken back.

While asking Gen. Tainor (sp?) about this subject, Chrissy--who was moaning and going "Oh my God" over the soldiers's stories, as if trying to pump up the segment when he saw the two weren't angry at Donald Rumsfeld or someone--suddenly asks about...JOHN KERRY!

This segment is an embarassment. Chrissy attempted to use brave, wounded soldiers to cause a controversy, and when that didn't work out, her tried to replay the '04 election.

I'm not a veteran but I was literally squirming in my seat at his obsequiousness. I've known a good number of vets in my day and they appreciate RESPECT, not asskissing, and being dealt with straight. Matthews has that mix of overblown gushiness AND that patronizing edge that makes his encounters with military vets come off as embarassingly insincere.

Of course, if they are presently serving and support Bush, that air somehow evaporates to be replaced by his not-quite concealed contempt.

I hear ya, I only watch TV when making a meal, and I flip around the news channels, but I wanted to hear the soldiers's stories. But of course he had to make himself the drama queen instead of getting to the facts of the story of these brave men who were put in an embarassing situation.

Nope--in a completely unrelated segment, he suddenly dropped a KERRY question in, completely out of context.

I'm amazed that one can watch that buffoon for more than
a few minutes. Aside from the fact that he's a partisan
Dem, his interviews with guests are strident, filled
with interruptions, talking over the guest and giving
speeches filled with liberal talking points posed as
questions. Olbermann is in the ratings gutter and Matthews
is slightly ahead. I tune in every once in a great while
for a few minutes just so I won't forget how bad MSNBC
really is.

actually I watch Chrissy to hate him and see what buffonery he is saying......I don't watch Olberman much at all. I just hate Chrissy's interruptions and drooling but sometimes he has good guests on....plus I just can't stand Shepard Smith.....mannequin boy I call him.....so during the G block and this time I watch something else.....gives me more ammo

Sorry, didn't see it.
What was his question about Kerry?

Purple hearts are awarded for combat related injuries. Accidental injuries, as tragic as they may be, should not receive them.

Mine was awarded to me in 1971.

Thank you for your service.

Matthews said something like "So say someone like John Kerry fired his weapon and was injured by it, that would still be worth a Purple Heart because he was wounded while responding to enemy action, right?"

Trainor (sp?) was obviously feeling bad for the two Iraq War vets on the show and seemed a bit befuddled at what the heck this had to do with anything, and I was pleased that, though he gave a direct answer, he prefaced it by saying something like "Without getting into the whole Kerry thing..." that yes, Purple Hearts were awarded for injuries that came about in the course of enemy action.

His description was interesting: He said if someone were lifting a box and the explosion of enemy fire, while not hitting him, startled him so he dropped the box and he injured himself, that would constitute being injured due to enemy fire, while a hundred yards away, if another soldier simply dropped a similar box in the course of unloading it WITHOUT the enemy fire being heard by him that would NOT constitue and awardable injury.

So basically he was saying that Kerry earned the Purple Heart for injuring himself. Of course Matthews was ignoring the context of the charge, which was that that fact was left out by Kerry.

Thank You.
My father served in WW2, he was awarded 1 purple heart.
My oldest brother did 2 tours in Vietnam, 2 purple hearts, 1 bronze star with valor.
My next oldest brother did 1 tour, no injury's.
I did 11 months. 1 purple heart.
My daughter recently got out of the Navy. She was off shore in Kuwait during the Liberation.

I was injured when a RPG or Grenade hit about 15ft behind my gun.

Once again thank you.
Was proud to serve.

YOU thanking ME???--I'm embarassed! Your whole family deserves our thanks. What a marvelous lineage, of which you are obviously and rightly proud.

I certainly hope you've written at length about your family's military history so your children and nieces and nephews can read it and know the details so they won't be lost over time. Trust me, they will be grateful to you if you put it all down in specific detail. My family has nothing like your history but I regret my father and his brothers never put down their non-combat experience, or even that my grandfather (who came here alone at 14) never wrote about his life.

Be safe.
