Understanding the Loons

Understanding the Loons Rush Limbaugh has it right...the Loons are funny when they're out of power, and dangerous when in. There are far too many examples this entire week to know where to begin...does "plethora of cornucopia" come close?

In keeping with the analogy of a family unit: on Wednesday, President Bush (herein referred to as "Dad", see also taxpayer), laid down the law for the coming year. He fully expects the Democrats (herein referred to as the "kids") to get started on cleaning their rooms, at least well enough that you can walk through it without tripping over a dead cat.

This leaves the kids not merely apoplectic, but fuming to the press (herein referred to as "friends") about what Nazi he is, he can't possibly expect them to lift a finger, and it's all his mess anyway. He never does anything right, he's stupid and simplistic, and doesn't realize how complex and multi-layered life is.

For the kids, the problems are obvious. First, he's Dad, and that right there is the main problem...he's the establishment! Tied to the rut...has to bow to the man...totally, like, cowed. Sure he can make grand statements, that appears to be his only job.

Kids call their friends and say "The Idiot says if I don't get my grades up, I'm not gonna get into college, and be a loser...man, I hate him. Like I need that crap, I could be dead by then...besides, I got plenty of time."

Of course, the kids do have busy days...get up (when Dad yells at them, what an A-hole) get ready for school (20 minutes in front of a mirror looking at their face), drift out to the car (5 minutes after the garage door goes up), forget lunch, forget permission slip, forget homework, forget $15 for field trip, look at themselves again in the mirror.

They get to school, then hang out with their friends and laugh at what retards and losers their parents are, and how they are soooo uncool. Then classes start, and they listen and write and posture for each other about how stupid their teachers are, etc...

Back at home, of course they kiss up in front of Dad, because they want that new outfit/haircut/shoes/video game...and woe to him who won't just fork over the cash. It's not like that pitiful allowance is gonna cut it...sheesh, money does grow on trees, you p*sshead...just, like, print some or something.

Of course, Dad does love his kids. He knows it's more of a partnership than they do. He only has a short time within which to knit into their lives at least a few of the threads he was given by his parents. He hopes that living by the codes and principles he had before they came along, some of those threads will wrap around their hearts and guide them when he is no longer there to be the overwhelming force of superficially good behavior they sometimes exhibit. He hopes they learn by his legacy of good works, that they see, someday, that good things grew out of his hands, and aspire to want their children to see good works from them.

We have all been sons and daughters, and a lucky many of us have been Dads and Moms. My Dad related to me that once, for a reason he didn't share, an old man he knew asked him "How many kids you got?"..."5"..."Any in prison?"..."No"..."Then you did alright by them."

The kids and the loons will never cut you slack, nor give you credit...you knew that coming in. But if, in the end, they do the good and right thing, then you did alright by them.
