What Would You Say?

Posted on 02/02/2005 4:46:28 PM PST by rightalien

I wanted an apology for comparing our troops to the terrorists. Here are two consecutive letters:

Yes, the election in Iraq had a great turnout and it went well. A lot Of people there welcome the change, while others disagree with it. Perhaps they might not disagree so much if it were not so much under U.S. Control (do you really think that we would "allow" the Iraqi people to elect Someone that we do not want in office?). Perhaps they might not disagree so much if our U.S. military was not laying waste to their cities and training the Iraqi security forces to be brutal to their own people ("arbitrary arrests" means arrests for no reason). Perhaps they might not disagree so much if our U.S. contractors were not controlling their infrastructure and resources.

What makes our military different from the terrorists if they plan to Use the same techniques as the terrorists to combat the terrorists? Is it because our military is organized and we have uniforms? Are people who fight against us called "terrorists" simply because they are unorganized and do not wear uniforms? What is the difference between a beheading and dropping a bomb on a family house? Why do you think that a beheading is worse?

Who do you think has used more explosives, the U.S. military or the "terrorists"? The U.S. Who has killed thousands more people, the U.S. military or the "terrorists"? The U.S. So, who has "terrorized" more, the U.S. military or the "terrorists"? Please be honest.

We are not spreading freedom. We are grabbing control. While Spreading propaganda.

I owe no apologies.

*********************************************

Just because I am critical of our war does not mean that I hate America as a whole. I hate what we are doing, and I hate the direction that our administration is taking us.

And I never said that everything that is wrong in the world is our fault. However, I do believe that we aim to control much of the world's resources (how many bases do we have all over?), and that we are self-serving and we do as we please ("It's okay if we torture our prisoners, but don't you ever dare torture our boys and girls!").

I think that we are in Iraq to depose a troublesome regime, control the oil, and secure a launching ground for possible further aggression against Iran, Syria, etc. And you can bet that anyone elected to run Iraq will be first-and-foremost someone that we support and who will cater to our ambitions (e.g., just like the puppet regime in Jordan). If an election occurs that we do not agree with, then we'll just go in and make sure that the right person gets into office (e.g., like in Haiti recently).

I love what this country is founded on, which is a system of checks and balances that are supposed to make sure that no single branch of government gets too much power. But now I think that we have a runaway executive branch and too many secret agencies. The checks and balances are being compromised, and the general atmosphere is that there should be no criticism.

I think that I make some valid points and raise pertinent questions, and critical vigilance is essential for the preservation of our democracy. The fact that many of us are not paying attention and that others seem to agree that criticism is wrong is a danger to our democracy.

Being vigilant is what makes me an American patriot, and for that I do not apologize (which is what you asked me to do).

What Would You Say?

Probably something along the lines of...

Don't drop the big one
If you a monkey on a string
Don't cut my lifeline
If you a doggie on a chain
Don't bite the mailman

...but that's just off the top of my head...

I would say you are wrong.

First of all, you like so many political reactionaries do not engage in comparative politics. You abstractly denounce U.S. policies. What are the alternatives? You do not explain. Lobbing cruise missiles in under Clinton was not inherently superior. This war on Iraq is being conducted with far greater public and global scrutiny than any other prior foreign policy toward Iraq. This makes it profoundly more legitimate than any alternative you might propose.

The eight million Iraqis have spoken. You are wrong. They wanted freedom and they never would have gotten it without the profound and yes costly U.S. force projection. Frankly, Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia are all shaking in their boots now. And yes it fundamentally calls into question all of our previous policies of purchasing containment. Bush's vision is uniquely good because it is humane. The patronizing policies of the past are over. This is the revolution that lefties pretend to be about. Democracy is on fire. It will consume the corrupt regimes of the earth.
