Site Highlight: Breederville.org

The internet is far more than porn, spam and spyware. Although there is plenty of garbage out there, the good far outweighs the bad. The 'killer app' for the internet is information. It may be news, health information, weather, hardware drivers or game reviews. The type of information is not what matters; availability, accessibility and specificity are what is important.

In the early days of the internet, the new buzz was "push" technology. Anyone remember Pointcast? They provided a program which would run in the background and periodically download headlines and stocks and weather information and display them on your screen saver. After some initial success, the venture bombed. Some, myself included, feel that push died with it.

Some would argue that "push" lives on via RSS feeds – but I don't agree. Push is where an outside source chooses what information to give you. RSS readers poll content providers that the end user has subscribed to. I am of the opinion that when push becomes user specific (based on preferences, interests or subscription), it is no longer push but instead has become a more convenient form of "pull".

Since the internet gained notoriety, I have always spent some time and energy trying to figure out an untouched niche I can fill, and make my millions. (It should be obvious that I have not found it yet. If you happen upon one, please let me know.) Still, as I jump from link to link, I am always amazed at what is available. It does not matter what your interest is – you can always find content relevant to you with a simple google search.

An example of the continued specialization of the net is Breederville.org. This fledgling site is a non-profit center intended to provide information and resources for those interested in animal welfare, preservation, and rescue. The term "animal welfare" always raises a flag with me. There are many organizations who do great work in this field, but there are others who use this cause as license to destroy the property and livelihood of others. Thus, I was pleased to find this statement on their site:

While we fully support recognized animal welfare organizations, we are opposed to "terrorists" and reserve our right to disallow inflammatory postings and links.

The vision of the site creators is to extend a helping hand to the small to medium 'mom and pops' as they buy and sell animals. The primary method of connecting buyer to seller is through an online Auction. If you browse the current auctions, you will see goats, horses, bunnies, cats and one beautiful Rat Terrier pup. (Sorry – I'm a little partial toward that breed.) The auction board provides nationwide direct marketing for those who would not otherwise have access to that kind of resource.

The other key resource this site provides is information. The library is intended to provide links to specialized content like tips on showing goats or helping a unique species get introduced such as Emus or Yaks. The forums provide a place for discussion and to get questions answered. (Yes, they are a bit bare as of yet – keep in mind this is a relatively new venture.)

What you see is not what you get, because there are also several new features which the development team is currently working on. The initial scope is the continental United States; however, future plans include adding Canada – once cattle trade between the US and Canada is reopened.

There is definitely something for everyone on the internet, and if animals are your thing, you might want to take a look at breederville.org.
