I think it might have been engineered by the premier "opposition researcher" for the Demos--he worked for Dean before joining Kerry. He is in SF and is known for getting the dirt anyway he can. (I don't think this is Carville, because his wife would divorce him and he would never be on Russert again.)
Oh, BTW, what happened to the Sandy Berger story?
