Robert Moses’ name should be mud: New York State should remove the racist man’s name from public…

… For 44 years, Robert Moses ruled over New York. Unelected, his power drawn from up to 12 concurrent city, state and federal appointments, he used his unparalleled control of public authorities with impunity. Deftly utilizing loopholes and creating new law, Moses had his own shadow government, with his own police force, flag, and an island under the Triborough (now Robert F. Kennedy) Bridge.

There is no debate over the sheer magnitude of what he built. His accomplishments bestride New York: 416 miles of highways, 13 bridges, 658 playgrounds and housing for 150,000 people. He constructed parkways, tunnels, beaches, zoos, parks, Shea Stadium, the New York Coliseum, the United Nations, Lincoln Center and much more.

Yet, too many of his grand achievements are either tinged with racism or scorched by it.

He built Jones Beach, the greatest public beach the world had ever seen. But when it opened, Moses wanted its visitors to only be white. To keep African Americans out, he built the parkway overpasses too low for buses, knowing full well that at the time most African Americans did not own cars.

He worked to ensure black war veterans could not move into Stuyvesant Town. He removed language in the city contract for its development that would have prevented discrimination.

Under the guise of urban renewal, 7,000 African Americans and Hispanics were evicted from a diverse, working-class neighborhood for the construction of Lincoln Center. Promised relocation assistance from Moses’ Slum Clearance Committee never came. Those displaced ended up in the Bronx and Harlem, further segregating New York City. …

Full headline: Robert Moses’ name should be mud: New York State should remove the racist man’s name from public works

And of course he was Republican (RINO) and Jewish. Keep it up, NYDN; not far away from the Slimes in terms of antisemitism now.

Abraham Lincoln wasn’t big on black people. I can provide the quotes if you need them. Should we tear down his monument and take his image off of our currency?

If one actually reads the writings of the abolitionists it is pretty clear they never intended what they were advocating translating into actually living with black people. If you read what they wrote about “Free States” it is pretty clear they never intended those states to be “free” for blacks. Funny how those unintended consequences just keep biting people in the ass.

Moses was just a man of his time. He evicted a lot of white and hispanic people from various areas in which he built. My husband’s grandparents in the Bronx for one.

Here is the real reason for the article:
Today, we are moving to correct many ravages of Moses. Car-centric planning, a central tenet of his vision, is finally giving way to real investments in mass transit and transportation alternatives.

The guy wants everyone to walk, to be controlled.

He purposely set those built in Harlem to colder temperatures, believing, for whatever reason, that African Americans didn’t like to swim in cold water.

What possible proof exists for an allegation like this?

New York City needs to raze Central Park and give it back to descendants of the black people they basically stole it from, then.

The era from which Moses came to power, in the 1930s, NY State was almost exclusively white. In 1930 - NY City was over 95% white, and upstate cities like Buffalo were 98% white. Race was something NY Citizens never had to confront before, as a multi-racial society was now suddenly upon them after the great migration of blacks starting in the Depression and even more in WWII for jobs in industry. Blacks were not only seen as a small minority, they were also seen by many NY’ers as outsiders, southerners without roots, who came for work, and their neighborhoods as temporary.

If people were moved or inconvenienced by Moses, of course the vast majority were white. Blacks did not have roots in NY State, so which neighborhoods are they going to settle in? And at the time, who is going to oppose those neighborhoods being torn down? His works were nearly universally seen by all as signs of “progress.”

Moses name will be removed from his various projects here in NY State - for sure. The political and social system here makes it a given. I can see the process: An unknown academic declares him “racist” and gives a credulous public the patina of deep knowledge.

NY State Democrats, particularly downstate, will seize on the issue for typical, short-term political reasons. Andrew Cuomo will follow along.

The Left will declare victory against another “enemy.”
